Huskies Sweep Sun Devils To Complete 2-0 Weekend At Home
February 16, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season Sunday afternoon with a gritty 4-0 win over Arizona State.
The Huskies swept for the third time this season, and second time at home, with Sophie Luescher clinching the match for the Dawgs on court five with a 6-1 third set.
Carina Syrtveit and McKenna Koenig finished off ASU's Tverijonaite/Nupbay 6-2 and it came down to a race to grab the doubles point between the top two courts.
Luescher and Erika Matsuda clinched just moments before Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter had the chance to do the same.
Luescher and Matsuda used a 6-3 margin to give the Huskies the lead heading into singles.
Jacobs and Carter were up 5-3 before the pair's match was abandoned.
Singles play was a battle on all six courts, but the Dawgs dominated in their second sets. All six second sets went to the Huskies, with Syrtveit using a tight 7-5 first set as momentum, shutting out ASU's Karsyn Evans 6-0 in the second.
Koenig gave Washington a 3-0 lead thanks to back-to-back 6-3 sets over the Sun Devils' Lily Taylor.
Luescher got the job done in a dominant 6-1 third set to clinch the match for UW.
"I feel like I showed a lot of toughness in my match today and I love how we competed as a team," Luescher said. "We lifted each other up and had a lot of fun the entire time."
Matsuda's match was abandoned on the top court, where the junior was battling back against No. 38 Tverijonaite. Matsuda had won a second set tiebreak before her doubles partner clinched.
Jacobs and Carter were also midway through third sets, with Jacobs up 3-1 and Carter tied three all.
The Huskies travel down to San Diego for back-to-back matches with San Diego State on Saturday, Feb. 22 and San Diego on Sunday.
