Huskies Conclude Run At NCAA Individual Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. – Washington women's tennis' run in the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships came to a close on day two at USTA National Campus.
All five Dawgs were in action today with two singles and two doubles pairs.
No. 96 Erika Matsuda was the first Husky to hit the court, competing against No. 39 Carolina Gomez Alonso of Arkansas. The two battled in the first set but Gomez Alonso edged out Matsuda 6-4, and the Razorback came away with a 6-0 victory in the second set to take the match.
After dropping the first set to No. 14 Irina Balus (Duke) 4-6, No. 68 Reece Carter bounced back with a 6-4 set two win to force a third set. Carter was down 4-2 in the second set but clawed her way back. The duo has some close game points in set three, but Balus came away with the victory, 6-1.
In the first Husky doubles match of the championship, Matsuda and Carina Syrtveit came back after dropping the first set 3-6 to come back and win 6-3 in the second set to force a 10-point tiebreak with Yale's Leena Friedman and Orly Ogily.
In the final doubles match of the day, No. 24 Marie Weissheim and Alexia Jacobs went toe-to-toe with No. 1 Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton of North Carolina. Weissheim and Jacobs took the opening set 6-1 but were not able to keep the momentum going in the second set, falling, 3-6. In the 10-point tiebreak, the teams traded points but the Tar Heels won the final three to take the match.
Washington will be back in action in January when they begin their spring slate. The full schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
