Abdul Gaddy Elevated To Assistant Coach
October 22, 2025 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington head men's basketball coach Danny Sprinkle has announced the promotion of former Husky standout Abdul Gaddy to an assistant coaching position.
Gaddy spent the 2024-25 season on Sprinkle's staff as director of player development, returning to his alma mater after more than a decade playing at the professional level in the US, Italy, Latvia and Germany.
"Abdul has been a valuable member of our team for the past year and I'm excited to officially add him to our coaching staff," Sprinkle said. "Abdul is not only someone who has a tremendous mind for the game but he also possesses an incredible passion for our program and the university as a whole. As one of the all-time great UW point guards, his experience at the college and professional levels is a great asset for our players."
One of the highest-rated recruits to ever commit to the Huskies, Gaddy was a McDonald's All-American and top-15 prospect out of Ballarmine Prep.
"I want to thank Coach Sprinkle for believing in me, he really told em that in our meeting" Gaddy said. "This whole staff, Andy (Hill), DeMarlo (Slocum), Tommy (Connor), Quincy (Pondexter), (Jerry) Hobbie, literally everybody on the staff. They've really pushed me to be better. They ask everything of me and I always want to come through for them. They've helped me grow a lot and I'm grateful to them.
"I'm also extremely grateful because this is my school. I bleed Purple. To be able to be a part of this and help us get back on the right track is special. We have an amazing group, of players, of staff and as a university. To be a part of that and to help us get back to winning ways is a dream come true."
A two-time captain with the Dawgs, Gaddy ranks No. 2 in program history in career assists with 469, averaging 4.0 per game for his career. The Tacoma product finished his career as the Pac-12's active leader in assists, more than 100 ahead of the next closest player.
Gaddy burst onto the scene as one of the youngest players in the nation as a freshman in 2009-10, starting the final 28 games of the season as the Huskies captured the Pac-10 Tournament Championship. As a rookie, Gaddy dished out 81 assists, the seventh most ever by a UW freshman.
Getting off to a strong start to his sophomore campaign, leading the Pac-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.1, ranking seventh in average assists (3.8) and ninth in three point shooting percentage (40.6) before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in January.
Battling back from the setback, Gaddy started all 35 games for Washington the following season. Gaddy finished the 2011-12 season with 312 assists, the third most in a single season in the history of the program. Gaddy was nominated for the Bob Cousy Award, awarded annually to the nation's top point guard.
In his final season in Purple and Gold, Gaddy didn't slow down, racking up 157 assists for the ninth-highest single season total in Husky history, becoming the first Dawg ever to post back-to-back 150+ assist seasons. The 6-3 point guard also posted his first double-digit scoring season, averaging 10.9 points per night.
Gaddy and the Huskies begin the regular season on Nov. 3, hosting UAPB at 8:00 p.m. PT. The game will stream live on B1G+.
