Branson’s Thunderbolt Snipes 1-0 Win Over Indiana
September 29, 2024 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Behind a late, long-range missile from Kelsey Branson, Washington earned a 1-0 win over Indiana on Sunday, earning three points to move up to eighth in the Big Ten Standings.
The victory made it a six-point weekend for the Huskies after UW took down Purdue 2-0 Thursday night.
The Huskies bossed play throughout the match, outshooting the Hoosiers 11-3 in the match. However, IU keeper Jamie Gerstenberg kept the visiting side in the affair with solid play in goal, racking up five saves.
On the other side, Mia Hamant was called into action for just one save, earning her fifth clean sheet.
The Huskies nearly broke through early on in the 15th minute on the counter attack as Kalea Eichenberger picked off a pass at midfield and fed Tatum Thomason in the box. However, the junior striker pulled her shot wide.
Nearing the halftime break, Ioanna Papatheodorou unleashed an audacious free kick from a wide angle. The senior's strike was headed for the top corner, but a diving save from Gerstenberg denied the Huskies the opener.
Already on the front foot, Washington received a boost in the second half when Rose Paredes was shown her second yellow card of the match in the 63rd minute, forcing the Hoosiers to play the final 27 minutes down a player.
Despite the advantage, the Huskies left it late to bag the winner, pulling ahead in the 85th minute. Following a failed clearance of a Radisson Banks service, Papatheodorou played a square ball to Branson, who hit it first time and bent a sumptuous shot into the upper 90 to send the home fans happy.
The Huskies will hit the road for a single match next week, visiting Los Angeles on Saturday to battle UCLA at 7 p.m. PT. The match will stream live on B1G+.
