The Washington men's rowing team has added two new members to the coaching staff as the 2024-25 season gets underway. Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Grady and former Notre Dame men's team head coach Quinn Klocke have joined the program as assistant coaches, the Blake W. Grady comes to Washington fresh off his Olympic victory, as he was a member of the men's four that won gold at the Paris Games. Grady was subsequently named the 2024 USRowing men's athlete of the year by his peers.
Grady, who rowed at Cornell, also competed in the four in the 2020 Olympics, and won silver in the event at 2023 World Championships. Grady's international career dates back to 2013, when he first raced at World Rowing Junior Championships. He was also a member of the U23 men's eight, coached by Callahan, that won gold at 2016 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
While at Cornell (2016-19), Grady spent four seasons in the Big Red's top shell, rowing in the varsity eight at IRAs all four years. The Bradford Wood, Pa., native also made the IRA All-Academic Team as a senior.
"Michael brings a host of experience and positive energy to the team," Callahan said. "He will provide a lot in terms of our domestic recruiting and will provide an excellent example to our students-athletes in their Olympic development."
Klocke comes to Seattle after having served as the head coach of the Notre Dame men's club rowing team, a position he held for three seasons after one spring as an assistant. In 2024 ,he led the his alma mater to their first-ever ACRA National Championship, having finished third in 2023 and fifth in 2022.
Klocke's Notre Dame crew also in the top-10 in total points at all three of those ACRA Regattas and, in 2023, he was named ACRA Great Lake Regional Coach of the Year. Klocke coached seven ACRA All-Americans and three ACRA All-Freshman team honorees.
Klocke will be assisting in the development of Freshmen rowers in their first year at Washington.
"Quinn was a walk-on oarsmen at Notre Dame," Callahan noted. "He's a self starter and his time as head coach of a collegiate club program will help instill Washington values in our young students."
Grady and Klocke join a staff led by Callahan, the programs' 18th year head coach, and assistant coach Nate Goodman, the former George Washington University head coach who won an IRA National Championship as a rower at Yale.
Longtime UW assistant Sergio Espinoza resigned following the 2023-24 season to pursue other opportunities.
"Sergio played a very significant role in so much of the successes this program achieved during his time here," Callahan said. "His hard work and commitment are much appreciated, and he'll be missed."
