Shell’s Brace Leads Huskies To 3-0 Road Win At Maryland
September 19, 2024 | Women's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Samiah Shell secured her first career brace and Radisson Banks added her third goal of the season as Washington earned its first-ever Big Ten road win in convincing fashion, dispatching Maryland 3-0 at Ludwig Field.
Shell's two goal night gives the sophomore four for the season, taking sole possession of the team lead. While the Huskies dominated in shots with a 20-3 advantage, keeper Olivia Juarez made two stops on the night in earning her second clean sheet of the year.
It took the Huskies just 47 seconds to garner the lead as Samiah Shell collected her own rebound, swinging her left and bulging the net to put the Huskies up 1-0 early.
While the Terrapins grew into the match as the half wore on, Washington created by far the more promising opportunities to double its lead.
UW's best chance to tack on a second came in the 24th minute, when Andrea Leyva rattled the crossbar with a header from close range.
Despite the chances, Washington had to wait until shortly after the second half restart to add onto its lead. Eight minutes after play resumed, Radisson Banks pounced on a Kelsey Branson rebound, sending a rocket past the diving keeper to make it 2-0 in favor of the Huskies.
Shell made it 3-0 in the 79th minute, benefitting from a significant deflection that sent the keeper the wrong way, putting the cherry on top of a successful first Big Ten road match.
Buoyed by the win, the Huskies will continue their east coast venture with a trip north to New Jersey, taking on Rutgers in Piscataway Sunday morning at 10 a.m. PT. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.com.
