SEATTLE -- Washington Volleyball looks to extend its unbeaten start to the season in its home opener this Friday, which doubles as the Apple Cup with Washington State in town to open up Alaska Airlines Arena for the year. The Huskies and Cougars renew the rivalry as non-conference foes at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13 as the first match of the Husky Invitational. It will also be UW's first time appearing live on the Big Ten Network.
After the Friday night opener, the Huskies will be back in Hec Ed on Sunday, Sept. 15, to close out the weekend against a tough UC Davis squad at 2 p.m., which will be streaming on Big Ten Plus. WSU and UCD will play each other on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
The Dawgs are 5-0 for the first time since 2016 after pulling off consecutive five-set wins at the Buffs Classic in Boulder last weekend. Both wins, against Georgia and Colorado, saw the Huskies battling back; against the Bulldogs the Huskies were down 0-1, and 1-2, and against the Buffs the Huskies dug out of an 0-2 hole. Senior Kiune Fletcher was named the Tournament MVP behind consistent point scoring and a big blocking presence, averaging 2.54 kills per set and 1.08 blocks per set. Junior Emoni Bush (2.00 kills/set; .323 Attack%) and freshman Julia Hunt (1.54 kills/set; 1.69 blocks/set) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Through two weeks, the Huskies have developed some positive trends. They have finished with more digs and blocks than their opponents in all five matches this season, and finished with a higher attack percentage. The Huskies are hitting .258 for the season and holding opponents to just .121. That mark of .121 for opponents is 12th-best in the NCAA. Coming off their best blocking performance in ten years (20 against the Buffs), UW now ranks 11th in the NCAA with 3.00 blocks per set, compared to 1.79 blocks per set a year ago.
Washington will be looking to snap a skid against the Cougars on Friday night, as WSU has won the past three meetings in the series. The Cougars have a 3-2 record, having lost their first two matches to Wyoming and Houston, and won the next three over Omaha, and twice against Eastern Washington. Head Coach Korey Schroeder is in his first season leading the Cougs. WSU will play this season in the WCC. Katy Ryan was voted to the Preseason All-WCC Team. Ryan leads the team with 3.17 kills per set, just ahead of Sage Brustad at 3.13. Emma Barbero is digging 4.78 balls per set and Italia Bernal is setting the team to a .150 attack percentage with 8.59 assists per set.
UC Davis is 4-2 and has already faced two Big Ten opponents in Indiana and Purdue, accounting for their only two losses. The Aggies had a big 3-2 win over Kansas State in the first week, and recently defeated Saint Mary's and Sacramento State in four sets. Jade Light leads teh team with 3.50 kills per set and Olivia Utterback is right behind with 3.42/set. Ally Chandler is hitting .323 with 1.75 kills per set. Julia Ng averages 4.58 digs per set and Allie Caldwell leads in blocks with 1.08 per set. UCD is hitting .192 and its opponents are at .197.
