Heartbreak Strikes As Dawgs Fall 2-1 At No. 10 Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Behind a dogged effort in the second half, Washington fought back to draw Thursday night's tilt at No. 10 Santa Clara even but a late Bronco goal dealt the Huskies a heartbreak 2-1 defeat at Stevens Stadium.
Samiah Shell pulled the Huskies even midway through the second stanza, netting her first collegiate goal.
The first half featured mostly cagey affair, with neither team spending a great deal of time in the attacking third. However, SCU's lone dangerous opportunity proved dividends as a foul in the box earn the home side a penalty in the 29th minute.
It appeared Husky keeper Mia Hamant had made the stop on the ensuing spot kick. Instead, the junior was deemed to have come off the line early as SCU was awarded another attempt from the spot. On the second attempt, Hamant got a hand to Marissa Vasquez shot but couldn't keep it out.
Down a goal at the restart, the Huskies came out flying in the second half, pinning the Broncos in their defensive zone in chase of the equalizer.
The Dawgs got their goal in the 74th minute as Riley Brown turned and burned her defender before cutting back to an open Shell in the box. The sophomore took a touch to her left and fired across the frame, hitting the side netting to knot things up at a goal apiece.
As Santa Clara fought to regain the lead, the Washington defense put in a hard shift to keep the Broncos at bay. However, SCU was able to strike off a corner in the 87th minute off of a Kat Jordan header.
Washington returns to action on Sunday back at home, hosting New Mexico State for a 1 p.m. PT kickoff at Husky Soccer Stadium. The match will be available for streaming through B1G+.
