FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Washington's NCAA Outdoor Championship squad is set as the NCAA West Prelims came to a close today at John McDonnell Field in Arkansas. Three more Huskies joined the travel roster to Eugene, which will host the championship final from June 5-8. Chloe Foerster, Sophie O'Sullivan, and Wilma Nielsen brought the total UW women's qualifiers to six, adding to the eight men to make the cut.
The West Prelim meet cut down fields of 48 athletes in every individual event to 12 who will reconvene in Eugene. Washington winds up with 14 combined entries for the season finale.
Foerster and O'Sullivan each moved through in the 1,500-meters today, while Nielsen punched her ticket in the 800-meters.
In the first quarterfinal heat of the 1,500-meters, O'Sullivan showed she's closing in on the form she showed last spring. From a tight lead pack, O'Sullivan and Texas Tech's Juliet Cherubet pulled away and Cherubet won in the fastest time of the week in 4;09.04, but O'Sullivan was right behind in a huge season-best time of 4:09.61.
Moments later, Foerster ran at the front of the second quarterfinal heat, doing a lot of the pace work from lane two. Needing a top-five finish to move on, Foerster was part of a group that gradually separated from the rest of the field and she powered down the homestretch securely in the front five. She finished in third in a time of 4:17.63.
It will be the first NCAA Outdoor appearance for Foerster, and the second-straight for O'Sullivan, who reached the finals last year. A native of Portland, Foerster will have the home-state advantage in Eugene.
Nielsen had the best finish ever by a Dawg in an NCAA 800-meters final at the indoor meet in March (6th-place) and she took the next step to reach the outdoor meet today. The Sweden native survived some traffic with 200-meters to go that broke her stride a bit, and she fought for a fourth-place heat finish in 2:03.11. That wound up being the first time qualifier, and seventh-fastest time overall, to move on.
Senior Samantha Friborg was hoping to punch her own 800m ticket today but was unable to find her usual kick after making a push for the lead with 300-meters left in her heat. Friborg wound up seventh in her heat and 21st overall in 2:07.49.
Julia David-Smith finished things up for the week in the women's 5,000-meters. David-Smith came in seeded just 34th in the field but she did everything she could to hang in the front of the pack for as long as she could. She finally lost ground on the leaders with two laps to go, but she still finished up 19th overall, majorly outperforming her seeding. Her time in the humid conditions was 16:18.72.
The first event for the Huskies today was the women's discus, with Kaia Tupu-South in flight one and Beatrice Asomaning in flight two. Tupu-South had personal-bests on two of her three attempts, going 178-1 on her first throw and then bettering that at 178-10 on her final attempt. That moved her up to No. 5 in school history. The sophomore had come in ranked 44th in the discus and finished 21st overall.
Asomaning had a best throw of 181-0 today to place 16th overall, just four places shy of advancing. She was seeded 19th coming in so outdid her ranking as well. The senior ends up ranked No. 2 in UW history outdoors in the discus and the hammer, as well as the indoor school record holder in the weight throw.
In the women's triple jump, junior Lauren Heggen took 44th overall in her first West Prelims appearance. She had a best mark of 40-6 ¼ in the second round.
