SEATTLE – It's hardware time at Hayward Field. The NCAA Outdoor Championships have arrived once again, with 13 Huskies set to challenge for championships this Wednesday through Saturday, June 5-8, in the home of their conference rivals from Eugene.
Men's events will take place on Wednesday and Friday, and women's events go on Thursday and Saturday, with the exception of the multis, as junior Jami Schlueter will compete in the decathlon from Wednesday-Thursday.
Heading into the national meet, the Husky women's team owns at No. 17 ranking, while the men come in at No. 25 nationally.
The men are looking for a fourth-straight Top-10 team finish at an indoor or outdoor championship, a streak that started with a 4th-place indoor finish in 2023, followed by ninth-place at the 2023 outdoor meet, then 10th-place at the 2024 indoor meet. Last year's ninth-place effort was the first top-10 outdoor finish for the men's team since 1979.
The women have scored at least 10 points at the last four NCAA Outdoor Championships, with top-25 finishes in three of those four years. They were tied for 29th last year and have a best of a tie for 17th under current Director Maurica Powell, back in 2019. The women were also 17th at this season's NCAA Indoor Championships.
The meet will be broadcast through ESPN, either streaming on ESPN+ or televised on ESPN or ESPN2.
- Wednesday's televised window will be begin at 4:30 p.m. Pacific time on ESPN2
- Thursday will air on ESPN2 starting at 5:30 p.m. PT
- Friday will air on ESPN2 from 6 p.m. PT
- Saturday will air on ESPN beginning at 2:30 p.m. PT
Of the thirteen Huskies headed to Eugene (Wilma Nielsen is a scratch in the 800-meters after initially qualifying), eleven have previous NCAA Championship and All-America experience, either indoors or outdoors. The only two first-timers at Nationals are freshman Amanda Moll and junior Jami Schlueter.
UW has four individual NCAA Champions looking to chase the top of the podium once again. Freshman Hana Moll won her first crown indoors this year, and will go for the indoor-outdoor sweep. Then the title-winning trio of Luke Houser, Nathan Green, and Joe Waskom will try to keep UW's incredible streak going in the 1,500m/Mile where those three have won the last four titles. Waskom was the 2022 outdoor 1,500m winner, and Green won it last year (with Waskom runner-up), while Houser won the 2023 and 2024 indoor mile titles. Nastassja Campbell is also the returning NCAA silver medalist in the pole vault.
Athletes reached Austin by surviving the West and East Preliminary Championships two weeks ago in Fayetteville, Ark. and Lexington, Ky., respectively. Each site advanced the top-12 athletes or relays in every event on to Eugene for fields of 24 in each event.
Team scores are compiled by individuals and relays finishing in the top-eight in their events. Points for the top eight places are the standard 10 for first-place, 8 for second, then 6-5-4-3-2-1 for third-through-eighth. The USTFCCCA All-America format remains the same this season, as the top-eight finishers in every event will be named First Team All-Americans, the 9-16 finishers will be Second Team All-Americans, and 17-24 will be honorable mention.
