FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Washington finalized its NCAA Outdoor Championship roster on the men's side with four more additions today, as its trio of NCAA champions all advanced once again in the 1,500-meters at the NCAA West Prelims, and senior Jonathan Birchman earned his second-straight trip in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best.
The West Prelim meet cuts fields of 48 athletes in every individual event down to 12 who advance to the national finals from June 5-8. The Dawgs will have eight men in Eugene at Hayward Field in two weeks. There is one more day of women's competition in Arkansas set for Saturday.
Individual national champions Joe Waskom, Luke Houser, and Nathan Green all took care of business in their quarterfinal races today, then Birchman joined them as the final Dawg to finish in the top-12 at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field
In the first heat of the 1,500-meters, Waskom, the 2022 national champ and 2023 runner-up, came flying around the final turn in third-place but surged into the lead on the outside and took the win in 3:39.83. He'll look to add to his trophy case in Eugene.
The second section saw 2023 champ Nathan Green, and two-time mile champ Luke Houser navigating the 12-man field near the front throughout. Houser pushed the pace at the lead on the final lap, and both Dawgs were safely in a group that separated from the rest of the race to earn top-five finishes to move on. Green was third in 3:40.04 and Houser was fourth overall in 3:40.45.
The last Husky qualifier was the senior hurdler Birchman, who ran out of the outside lane and got himself a new personal-best in what was the fastest out of the day's three quarterfinal sections. Birchman took third overall, but with the fifth-fastest time of the day, running 49.98, his first time breaking the 50-second barrier. He will run in his second-straight national semifinal, looking to reach his first final.
A few more Dawgs saw their stellar seasons wrap up today in Fayetteville.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Pac-12 silver medalist Sam Affolder placed 30th overall with a time of 9:08.59. He put himself up in the mix but ran out of steam in the final lap.
Trevontay Smith's excellent freshman campaign wrapped up as he placed 22nd overall in the triple jump. He had a best of 50-4 ¾ on his first attempt but fouled his second and third chances. Still it's a top-25 regional finish for the true freshman who also took third at Pac-12s and went to No. 3 in school history in his first season.
The final Husky in action was Leo Daschbach in the men's 5,000-meters. Daschbach dug down deep two weeks ago to score in both the 10k and 5k at altitude to clinch the Husky team title in Boulder. He was unable to find his best form today but battled to finish 17th in the heat and humidity in 14:37.49.
