SEATTLE โ The Husky track and field squads shift focus this week from conference to qualifying. The NCAA West Preliminary Championships are at hand, with athletes looking to extend their seasons for a couple more weeks and advance out of the Prelims to the NCAA Outdoor Championship final site. To do that, they'll need top-12 finishes this week in Fayetteville, Ark. where the four-day-long meet runs from Wednesday to Saturday, May 22-25.
ย
To reach this stage of the season, athletes had to rank in the top-48 in their event among all the teams in the west or east half of the country. Simultaneously this week, the NCAA East Prelims will go in Lexington, Ky. Twelve qualifiers in each event from the west and twelve from the east will make it to Eugene, Ore. where the outdoor championships take place from June 5-8.
ย
The 16th-ranked Husky women's team features 17 individuals and 19 entries in Arkansas this week, while the 18th-ranked and Pac-12 Champion men's squad owns 19 individuals/entries. Decathlete Jami Schlueter automatically advances to NCAA Outdoors based on his season-best score, so he's looking for plenty of company to join him.
ย
All five of UW's recent Pac-12 Champions will be looking to extend their stellar seasons this week. Chloe Foerster and Hana Moll are each the top seeds in the 1,500-meters and pole vault on the women's side. Joe Waskom returns focuses on the 1,500-meters after winning the Pac-12 steeplechase title two weeks ago, while Chandler Ault and Prestin Artis look to come through once again in the javelin and long jump, respectively.
ย
The Husky men are coming off their second-straight Pac-12 Championship victory, in the final installment of the conference meet. UW had never won the meet until the final two years, when the Dawgs scored 151 points in 2023 and 150 in 2024 to take the crown. Head Coach Andy Powell was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. The Husky women's team finished fifth at Pac-12s with 69 points, their fifth-straight season in the top-five.
ย ย
The West Prelim schedule alternates days between men's and women's events, with the men starting things off on Wednesday, then the women getting going on Thursday. All the track action takes place in the late afternoon and into the evening. Field events start as early as 7 a.m. Pacific with the hammer throws and continue throughout the day.
ย
Every track event in Fayetteville from the 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds; a first round that cuts the field from 48 to 24, and a quarterfinal that takes it from 24 down to the advancing 12. Longer racesโthe 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000-meters, and 10,000-metersโhave just one round in Fayetteville.
ย
In the throws and horizontal jumps, all 48 athletes will simply have three attempts each to decide the advancing 12. Vertical jumps will continue to raise the bars until a top-12 is decided.
