Huskies Pummel Portland In Midweek Action
April 16, 2024 | Baseball
SEATTLE βΒ Two days off a comeback win over UCLA, Washington kept its momentum going Tuesday, clobbering Portland 11-2 in a midweek affair at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Starter Max Fraser was literally perfect in his five innings, setting down all 15 batters he faced. Jase Evangelista, Gianluca Shinn and Ethan Unruh combined to finish the final four innings.
Β
The blowout was built slowly at the beginning, with Aiva Arquette driving in a run with a single in the third and Cooper Whitton tacking on another with a fourth-inning sac fly. Then, the Dawgs blew the game open in the fifth.
Β
The rally started with four straight singles to leadoff the frame, making it 3-0 on Cam Clayton's slap through the left side. Cooper Whitton then drew a bases loaded walk and Carson Ohland sent a sacrifice fly to center, adding two more runs.
Β
Colton Bower put a cap on the five-run frame, plastering a two-run double hard off the outfield wall, bringing the score to 7-0.
Β
A solo home run in the sixth got the Pilots on the board but UW quickly countered. Arquette led off with a triple to center and was brought in with the very next pitch with a sharp single to right. Ybarra then scored on Braeden Terry's sacrifice fly and Clayton came across on a Whitton grounder, extending the lead to 10-1.
Β
The Pilots pulled a run back in the ninth but it was all Dawgs on the afternoon as the Huskies matched their biggest margin of victory of the season.
Β
Washington hits the road to continue Pac-12 play on the weekend, heading to Salt Lake City to square off with Utah Friday through Sunday. All three games will be available on the Pac-12 family of networks.
