Dawg Bats Unload, Even Series With Washington State
March 29, 2024 | Baseball
Carrying a bulk of the load was Aiva Arquette, who collected three hits on the night, including a pair of big flies. Colin Blanchard, AJ Guerrero and Jeter Ybarra also posted multiple knocks.
Husky starter Calvin Kirchoff improved to 2-1, striking out a career-high eight batters over 5.0 innings, surrendering three runs. Finishing the final four frames, Sam Boyle earned his second save of the season.
The Cougars grabbed a brief lead in the fourth inning on Alan Shibley's RBI single. However, the Huskies would takeover in the next half inning and never look back, tagging the Cougars for seven in the home half.
Blanchard got the barrage started, yanking a three-run home run over the wall in left-center, his first career home run. Carson Ohland's fielder's choice with the bases juiced brought in another run before Jeter Ybarra crushed a three-run jack ballooning the lead to 7-1.
Arquette's first blast of the night quieted a brief Cougar rally, sending an oppo rocket out to right center in the sixth, pushing the lead back out to 8-3.
WSU plated a pair in the eighth but the Huskies responded immediately, posting six runs of their own to end any hope of a comeback.
After Cooper Whitton reached on an error, Arquette got ahold of a pitch and sent a towering shot off the batter's eye in dead center. Ybarra brought in another run with a bloop single to left before Guerrero put the punctuation on the night.
The junior got an inside pitch he could handle on a 1-1 count and didn't miss, tattooing a line-drive bomb into the bullpen in left for the second three-run homer of the night for the Dawgs.
Boyle cleaned things up in the ninth, collecting the final three outs to setup Saturday's rubber match.
The Huskies and Cougars will play for the series at 1:05 p.m. PT. The game will be available for viewing on the main Pac-12 Network channel, as well as Pac-12 Washington.
