UW Falls In Marathon Affair To Santa Clara
March 02, 2024 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Washington baseball team came up on the wrong side of a marathon game with Santa Clara Saturday at Husky Ballpark, falling 3-2 to the Broncos in 15 innings.
Husky starter Calvin Kirchoff delivered six scoreless innings with just three hits surrendered, but was forced to take a no decision. Jared Engman, despite receiving the loss, allowed just a single run over six frames of relief, striking out six.
After both sides traded zeroes through two, the Dawgs took the lead in the third, with Blake Wilson coming home on a wild pitch.
While the UW offense was unable to add to its lead, Kirchoff kept the Huskies in front with three more scoreless innings. However, an error in the field allowed the Broncos to even the score at 1-1 in the seventh.
An RBI double that landed on the left field chalk brought in a second SCU run in the ninth, putting the Huskies in need of a rally.
Down to their final out, the Huskies got just that. With Sam DeCarlo standing on third, Aiva Arquette's opposite field blast came mere inches from ending the game, caroming off the yellow stripe at the top of the wall for an RBI double to deadlock the game at two runs apiece.
However, after the winning run was thrown out at the plate in the 13th, a leadoff home run in the 15th gave the Broncos the win and the series.
Washington and Santa Clara will finish up with one final matchup on Sunday, squaring off at 1:05 p.m. at Husky Ballpark. The game will be streamed live on Washington Live Stream 2. Links to live coverage are available at GoHuskies.com.
