Huskies Get Hot Down The Stretch, Down No. 14 Texas 9-3
March 15, 2024 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas βΒ Entering the seventh down 3-1, the Washington bats caught fire late, propelling the Huskies to a 9-3 victory over No. 14 Texas in the opening game of the series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field Friday night.
Β
The offensive spark was stoked by Jeter Ybarra, went a perfect 5-for-5 on the night with three doubles and four RBIs. Ybarra is the first Husky with five hits in a game since 2019.
Β
Grant Cunningham picked up the win in relief, entering in the fourth and finishing the game from there. The sophomore held the mighty Texas offense scoreless in his 5.1 frames, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out a pair.
Β
The Huskies struck first in the game as Ybarra ripped a frozen-rope double over the center fielder's head, bringing home Cam Clayton.
Β
An inning-ending double play kept the Dawgs in front in the home half of the frame, but Texas plated three in the fourth to jump ahead 3-1.
Β
After failing to capitalize on a runner in scoring position in the two previous innings, the Huskies broke through in the seventh and kept piling on.
Β
With the bases filled with Dawgs, Ybarra got things rolling for UW, going the other way for a two-run single, bringing around Colin Blanchard and Clayton to tie the game. On the very next pitch, AJ Guerrero smoked a double to right-center, plating Aiva Arquette. Just like that, the Huskies led once again.
Β
A Cooper Whitton two-run single added on before a loose throw from the UT infield allowed the San Diego native to come home. By inning's end, the 3-1 deficit had turned around into a 7-3 lead.
Β
Another Ybarra two-bagger scored Arquette in the ninth and Michael Brown's sharp single plated Ybarra to finish out scoring for the night.
Β
Cunningham shut it down in the ninth, retiring seven men in a row to close out the contest.
Β
Winners of back-to-back games, the Huskies will look to keep it going Saturday against the Longhorns, facing off at 12:30 p.m. PT. The game will air live on the Longhorn Network.
