SEATTLE β Two of the most decorated Dawgs of recent years showed they both still have plenty left in the tank tonight, as All-Americans Haley Herberg and Jayden White each broke their own school records on day one of the Husky Classic inside the Dempsey. Both Herberg and White had gone two years since setting their respective records in the women's 5k and men's weight throw, and fought back from injuries, to return in faster and stronger shape.
Β
Herberg, a former Pac-12 Cross Country Champion and two-time scorer at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, redshirted the 2023 track season but returned to racing unattached late last spring and tonight, two years after she set the indoor 5,000-meters record at the 2022 Husky Classic, she lowered it by a second with a gritty time of 15:38.37.
Β
This was the season debut for White, who has finished fourth and fifth in the weight throw at the past two NCAA Indoor Championships. The senior last set the School Record on Feb. 25, 2022, but today on his fourth-round attempt, White launched 74-feet, 5.5-inches, breaking his old record by just over four inches. That places White at No. 7 in the NCAA this season, a safe bet to make a fourth trip to indoor nationals.
Β
Those two records were bolstered by outstanding results from the Dawgs in the 3k and 5k heats and the men's pole vault, plus wins from Beatrice Asomaning in the women's weight throw, and a 1-2 finish in the men's triple jump from freshmen Trevontay Smith and Roman Hutchinson.
Β
All told the Huskies had five new marks for the Top-10 lists. A busy Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m. will bring the Husky Classic to a close by around 1:00 p.m.
Β
Distance Events
Β
In addition to Herberg's record-breaking time in the 5k, India Weir also climbed up the Top-10 list with a four-second PR, as she ran 15:51.02, which puts her fifth all-time. Naomi Smith had a season-best 16:34.38 and redshirt freshman Josephine Welin ran her first indoor 5k in 16:38.22.
Β
The men's 5,000-meters was led by redshirt frosh Jamar Distel, who dropped a huge 17 seconds off his lifetime best in the 5k, also getting a heat win in a time of 13:50.01. Freshman Tyrone Gorze, competing unattached, was right behind Distel in 13:51.69 for second in that heat.
Β
Redshirt freshman Evan Jenkins continued his impressive first official track campaign as he took sixth overall in the top heat of the men's 3,000-meters, taking another five seconds off his Freshman Record and going to No. 5 in school history with a 7:46.58. Leo Daschbach also ran a third-consecutive PR this indoor season, going 7:55.40 for 11th overall. James Crabtree also posted a PR of 8:07.43 and Sam Affolder finished in 8:18.62.
Β
The women's 3k saw Sophie O'Sullivan move up in distance and post a 9:15.75, while Ella Borsheim ran 9:29.23, and Saskia Lloyd had a PR of 9:41.23.
Β
Jumps
Β
Washington's three-headed monster in the men's pole vault enjoyed another night of personal-bests. Mathis Bresko, Simon Park, and Max Manson, three veteran transfers into the program, have all leaped to new heights in their short time as Dawgs working with Associate Head Coach Toby Stevenson.
Β
Tonight, Bresko and Park each grabbed PRs. Bresko made 18-1 ΒΌ, tying Manson's best from earlier this season, as the two are now each ranked at No. 8 in the NCAA this year, and they're also tied at No. 3 in UW history. Park also got his second PR of the season, making 17-7 ΒΌ. Manson cleared that height as well on his first attempt, before going out at 17-11. Husky grad Jacob Englar also made 18-1 ΒΌ tonight.
Β
Trevontay Smith got a win in the triple jump going 48-8 ΒΌ and Roman Hutchinson was second at 46-1 ΒΌ. On the women's side, Lauren Heggen took fifth, going 39-4 Β½.
Β
Sophomore Leland Lieberg had another collegiate-best clearance in the high jump, as he went 6-6 ΒΎ, getting it on a third attempt, to finish second. Lieberg took three tries at 6-8 ΒΎ.
Β
Throws
Β
White's record in the men's weight means that three of the four indoor throwing events have seen new School Records this season. Beatrice Asomaning got the first one in the women's weight two weeks back. She had the second-best mark of her career today in getting the victory, as she went 69-10, with another throw of 69-9. Asomaning has now won all five of her competitions this season. Yvonne Colson finished in fourth-place with a best of 56-11, the second-best mark of her season and career.
Β
Sprints
Β
Most of Washington's sprints crew is training through this weekend's meet after traveling to Nebraska last weekend, but a few Dawgs left tracks today.
Β
Freshman Jonathan Frazier made the final of the 60-meter hurdles, where he placed third overall with a time of 8.25 seconds.
Β
In the women's 200-meters, sophomore Sophia McHenry ran a personal-best time of 26.01.
