SEATTLE – The Huskies make a Big Ten road trip this week, one year before officially joining up with the conference. Madison and Ann Arbor will get a visit from the Dawgs this Friday and Sunday, Feb. 2 and 4.
Washington (2-2) takes on Wisconsin first on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. From there the Dawgs travel to take on 11th-ranked Michigan on Sunday at 8 a.m. Pacific time.
The Dawgs are coming off a couple setbacks in Tennessee last week at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, where they fell to Oklahoma and then lost a tough one to South Florida where five of the six singles matches went a full three sets, but USF earned three of those in a 4-1 win. Washington's 12th-ranked doubles team of Dzianis Zharyn and Cesar Bouchelaghem did pick up another big victory, beating USF's No. 1 pair which is ranked 9th in the nation.
The Badgers have had injury issues that prevented them from starting a full lineup in their most recent match, a loss to Old Dominion. Wisconsin has also had close losses to Notre Dame (2-5), DePaul (3-4), and Miami (2-4). Michael Minasyan has had the most dual singles success so far, going 3-1 at the 1 and 2 positions. The Badgers were 11-11 and 4-5 in the Big Ten last year.
Michigan (3-1) just punched its ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a big home win last week over then-No. 9 Stanford, 4-3. Michigan's one loss came to No. 6 Tennessee by a 3-4 score. The Wolverines are led by 9th-ranked Gavin Young, and 61st-ranked Jacob Bickersteth, and in doubles the duo of Young and Nino Ehrenschneider are ranked No. 31. Last year, Michigan came to Seattle and had a 5-2 win, as Cesar Bouchelaghem and Brett Pearson got singles wins for the Huskies. The Wolverines lost in the NCAA quarterfinal last year.
