SEATTLE -- Washington's final regular season road trip takes it farther east than any trip yet this season, as UW visits Columbus, Ohio for the first time since 2021, and University Park, Pa. for the first time since all the way back in 1995. With just two weeks and four matches left for a postseason push, the Huskies (19-7, 9-7 Big Ten) know every match is important to leave no doubt of their NCAA tourney worthiness.
The Huskies start the trip at Ohio State (12-14, 5-11 Big Ten) this Friday, Nov. 22, with a 4 p.m. Pacific first serve, streaming on Big Ten Plus. Then the Dawgs head to Rec Hall to take on No. 4 Penn State (25-2, 15-1 Big Ten) on Sunday, Nov. 24. First serve against the Nittany Lions will be 11 a.m. Pacific, again streamed on Big Ten Plus.
Washington is 3-3 in its past six matches to currently sit 33rd in the NCAA's RPI formula, and remain in the receiving votes category of the AVCA top-25. In its past two wins, over Northwestern and Minnesota, the Huskies have fired off 13 aces in each. The Huskies now rank second in the Big Ten in conference matches with 1.78 aces per set, their highest ranking in any statistical category. UW is eighth in kills per set in the league at 12.84 and ninth with a .227 attack percentage.
Emoni Bush has led the Huskies in kills in the past four matches since transitioning from the right to the left pin, averaging 4.23 kills per set, hitting .234 with 2.31 digs per set. Since returning from injury three matches ago, Audra Wilmes has been playing well with 2.89 kills per set and a .292 attack percentage plus 2.11 digs per set.
Ohio State is 5-11 in conference but has won four of its past six matches, coming off a win over Rutgers and a loss to Maryland. In league play, OSU ranks 12th in attack percentage at .187 and it is surrendering a .222 mark to opponents. The Buckeyes are sixth with 1.48 aces per set, 11th with 2.20 blocks per set, and fourth with 14.49 digs per set. One of the most prolific attackers in the conference is Emily Londot, averaging 4.31 kills per set in Big Ten play to rank fifth. Rylee Rader is hitting .328 with 1.81 kills per set. Libero Olivia Hasbrook is eighth with 3.77 digs per set and adds 0.34 aces per set. Washington started the 2021 fall season in Columbus and lost a 3-1 match to the Buckeyes that year, thought it was not in the Covelli Center but in Nationwide Arena.
Penn State has just one loss in conference play, falling at Wisconsin on Nov. 9. After that loss the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions came back with a sweep of Illinois and 3-1 road win at Maryland. Penn State is undefeated at home this season, at 13-0. Their only other loss this year was to No. 1 Pittsburgh. Penn State is hitting .268 in Big Ten play and holding opponents to .186. They are getting most of their points the old-fashioned way, leading the league with 14.56 kills per set. PSU ranks sixth with 2.48 blocks per set and third with 15.03 digs/set. Jess Mruzik is second in the league with 4.49 kills per set, hitting .249. Freshman setter Izzy Starck is leading the conference with 11.17 assists per set. Middle Taylor Trammell is leading the nation in attack percentage at .466, and in league play she averages .458 with 2.17 kills per set. Maggie Mendelson also averages 2.05 kills per set out of the middle and hits .293. Gillian Grimes is fifth in the league with 3.88 digs per set. The last three meetings between UW and Penn State came in the NCAA tourney. Penn State won a Sweet 16 match in 2018, and swept the Huskies in the 2013 Final Four. Washington beat PSU in the 2006 Elite Eight in Seattle.
