Dawgs Take Down No. 5 Michigan State Behind Papatheodorou’s Free Kick Strikes
October 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Behind a pair of free kick golazos from senior Ioanna Papatheodorou, Washington erased an early 1-0 deficit to take down No. 5 Michigan State Sunday afternoon on Montlake, 2-1.
The victory is UW's first over a top-5 foe since 2017, when the Huskies beat No. 2 Florida 1-0 in Seattle.
Papatheodorou's brace was her second of the week after bagging a pair of goals, including the match winner, in Thursday's 3-1 win over Michigan.
The Huskies found themselves down a goal just over seven minutes into the match following an own goal. However, the Dawgs responded from the adversity well, building attacking play of their own.
The momentum paid off in the 21st minute as Papatheodorou buried her first of two distance strikes, sending a rocket from 33 yards off the underside of the crossbar and in.
With the score leveled, play evened out and both sides hit the halftime break deadlocked at a goal apiece.
Michigan State came out for the restart on the front foot, but a relentless defensive effort from the Dawgs held the Spartans at bay.
Kelsey Branson nearly put the Huskies ahead in the 75th minute off the counter, sending a long range effort just over the bar. Shortly after, the Huskies saw a flurry of shots inside the 18 blocked before Tatum Thomason's shot was caught by Spartan keeper Kaitlyn Parks.
A little less than 10 minutes later, the Huskies had their winner. Papatheodorou earned the free kick for herself, drawing a foul a few feet outside the 18. The Greek international took the ball herself and sent another perfectly struck ball into the back of the net to seal three points for the home side.
Six points up on the week, Washington returns to the road next week for a two-match swing, taking on Iowa Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PT and Nebraska at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Thursday's match in Iowa City will be aired on the Big Ten Network.
