SEATTLE – Though she didn't know it at the time, and later had to be convinced, senior Beatrice Asomaning did in fact set her first School Record tonight, with the farthest ever mark by a Husky in the women's weight throw. Asomaning's toss was one of several outstanding efforts from UW field athletes today as day one of the two-day UW Invitational took over the Dempsey.
Seven new top-10 marks were achieved today, five from Husky vaulters, jumpers, and throwers. Senior transfer Max Manson PR'd in just his second meet as a Husky, clearing 18-1 ¼ to tie for third in school history and go to No. 7 in the NCAA this season. Senior Kunle Akinlosotu and freshman Trevontay Smith went 1-2 in the triple jump, both over 15-meters.
Highlights on the track included Bruno Comin Pescador setting a 60m hurdles PR of 8.07 that broke him into that top-10 list for the first time. Then the night ended with redshirt freshman Evan Jenkins crushing the Freshman Record in the 3,000-meters and going to No. 9 in school history in 7:51.95.
Asomaning, a native of Olympia, came into the meet second in school history in the weight throw, but she further closed the gap on the top mark with her round three throw that went 69-feet, 1-inch, a new career-best. She now was seven inches off the 2020 record of 69-8 ¼ set by Angel Nkwonta. After throws of 68-6 and 67-6 in rounds four and five, Asomaning leveled up one more time in the final round, landing one at 70-feet, 1-inch, the first 70+ throw in Husky history.
However, Asomaning believed that the record was still a centimeter beyond what she had thrown, and had to be shown some proof. "I didn't think I had it until like five minutes ago, so I'm really hyped," said Asomaning. "I'm super excited. This has been a goal of mine as long as I've been here so in the fifth year finally getting it feels really good."
That throw puts Asomaning 13th nationally based on marks entering the weekend, with the top-16 reaching NCAAs. "My goal is to get to Nationals. I think I'm going to have to throw a half meter further but I think it's doable and I'm really excited (to go for it.)"
Saturday brings the final three hours of the UW Invitational from 9-12, then it will be time for the inaugural "Mile City" starting at 1 p.m., with the elite sections of the mile scheduled for 3 p.m.
Women's Sprints
Sprinting for the Dawgs today was only in the 200-meters, where Danielle Hunter took sixth overall in the 200-meters in 25.30, with Rhonda Newton taking 9th in a PR of 25.50, and Sophia McHenry clocked a 26.15.
Women's Distances
Perri Bockrath made her Dempsey debut as a Dawg tonight, leading UW's efforts in the 3,000-meters with a time of 9:18.10, just ahead of her fellow former Kentucky teammate Tori Herman who finished in 9:24.16. Redshirt freshman Josephine Welin turned in a 9:32.76 time to get her season rolling.
Naomi Smith had a solid 5k run tonight as she placed seventh overall in 16:38.22, and Saskia Lloyd was 13th in 17:05.65.
Women's Jumps
Lauren Heggen took third in the triple jump, getting her best-ever indoor mark at 40-2 ¾, which put her up further on the Husky top-10 to No. 6. Freshman Ava Washburn was ninth overall with a best of 37-5 ¾.
Women's Throws
Along with Asomaning's record-setting evening, Yvonne Colson also had a monster PR in the weight. Colson added more than four feet to her lifetime-best with a throw of 59-feet, which moves her to No. 5 in school history.
Men's Sprints
The Huskies posted three of the top-five times in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, led by a PR and new top-10 time from decathlete Bruno Comin Pescador. The Spanish National Champion ran 8.07 for the second-fastest time of the day, which puts him to No. 7 in school history. Fellow decathlete Jami Schlueter was just .02 off his PR in 8.15, and freshman Jonathan Frazier had the fifth-fastest prelim time in 8.22. In the final, Comin Pescador and Schlueter did not race, but Frazier lowered his time to 8.18, a season-best.
Men's Distances
The fast heat of the men's 3k closed out tonight's session with Jenkins looking like a veteran in what was his first official track race in the Husky singlet. He took 10 seconds off his lifetime-best and was second overall among collegiates and fifth overall in 7:51.95, ninth in school history. Distel was close behind in 7:55.29 also in his first full track race in uniform.
Right behind Distel, true freshman Tyrone Gorze ran 7:55.50 unattached. Another unattached freshman, Thom Diamond, ran 8:08.48. James Crabtree posted a time of 8:12.78 and Sam Affolder came across in 8:22.95.
Men's Jumps
Manson wasn't the only new Dawg to PR in the men's vault today, as another transfer, Simon Park formerly at Harvard, cleared a career-high 17-5 ½. Mathis Bresko made 16-11 ½ as well.
Akinlosotu's winning triple jump of 50-1 ¾ was an indoor lifetime-best by half an inch. He held off a challenge from Smith, his freshman teammate, who had a big season-best of 49-3 ½ for second.
Comin Pescador was the top Dawg in the high jump, clearing 6-4 ¾.
