September 23, 2023 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – No. 7 Washington begins a four-match home stand as No. 5 Portland makes the trip to Seattle on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff from Husky Soccer Stadium is set for 4:3 p.m. and streaming on Pac-12 Insider.
LAST TIME OUT
Washington dropped its second match of the season at Seattle U on Thursday night in the Fewing Cup 3-2. Peter Kingston and Harrison Bertos recorded their first goals as Huskies while Richie Aman assisted on both goals.
TOP OF THE PAC
For the second year in a row, the Huskies were picked to finish first in the conference in the preseason poll, voted on by the league's six coaches. In addition, four Huskies - Sam Fowler, Nate Jones, Christian Soto and Kalani Kossa-Rienzi - were named to the Pac-12 preseason team.
PAC-12 RECORD WATCH
Sam Fowler has a chance to become the Pac-12's all-time leader in both career shutouts and GAA (Goals Against Average). He enters his senior campaign third on the Conference's clean sheets list (28, two behind Spencer Richey's Pac-12 record 30).
THE RETURNERS
Plenty of experience returns for Washington with 27 returners from the 2022 team, including All-Pac-12 selections Nate Jones, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, Chris Meyers, Imanol Rosales and Christian Soto.
THE NEWCOMERS
The Huskies also brought in some new talent with six freshman and four transfers – Peter Kingston (Seattle U), Mani Diop (Akron), Bryan Iliohan (Cal Baptist) and Conner Leber (Cal Poly). Freshman Charlie Kosakoff joined the program back in January as an early enrollee and played the entire spring season with the team.
RANKED NON-CON MATCHUPS
The last time the Huskies faced a ranked non-conference opponent was twice in 2019 vs. then-No. 18 Denver and at No. 16 Michigan State prior to the match at No. 3 Indiana. Under head coach Jamie Clark, the Huskies are 7-4-1 all-time in ranked regular season non-conference matchups.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Since 1997, the Huskies have posted a 179-63-20 overall record at Husky Soccer Stadium, winning at least eight matches in 13 seasons including a 10-1-2 mark in 2013. Last season, the Huskies set a new program record for single-match attendance when 3,876 people came to see Washington take on Seattle U in the Fewing Cup.
USL2 CHAMPS
Peter Kingston, Khai Brisco and Joe Dale competed with Ballard FC this summer as the squad went on to win the USL2 National Championship with the 2-1 win over Lionsbridge FC on Aug. 5. Kingston scored the match-winning goal in stoppage time on his way to being named MVP. The title is the first for Ballard in its history.
