Huskies and Houston Play to 0-0 Stalemate
August 17, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington (0-0-1) came on strong in Thursday night's season opener against Houston (0-0-1) but was unable to breakthrough and the Huskies and Cougars settled for a scoreless draw at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Fielding a starting XI with just one primary starter from a season ago, the Huskies spent the bulk of the opening frame settling in and finding its stride. The Cougars led 3-1 on shots but neither side seriously threatened the opposing goal.
Much like the opening 45 minutes, the second half started evenly for both teams as they tried to break down the opposing defense.
However, with 25 minutes left on the clock, the Dawgs put their foot on the pedal and chased the opener.
After a pair of shots from midfielder Tatum Thomason was saved, rookie Radisson Banks used a solo effort on the left flank to create possibly the Huskies' best chance of the night.
Collecting a through ball in space, the native Californian cut onto her right foot before chopping on to her left and unleashing a shot from just outside the six, narrowly missing the far post.
Washington continued to put pressure on the Cougar defense as the clocked ticked down, with Jadyn Holdenried and Kelsey Branson forcing a save out of Olivia Dietrich, but couldn't break through as the score finished nil-nil.
The Huskies will hit the road for the first time this upcoming weekend, taking on the Vandals of Idaho Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
