SEATTLE – Washington Track & Field is looking to put an exclamation point at the end of an already historic 2022-23 competition season as the year concludes this week with the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Austin, Texas and Mike A. Myers Stadium is the site for this year's four-day championship meet, starting Wednesday, June 7, and wrapping up Saturday, June 10.
The Huskies have their largest group in the current championship format headed to nationals, with twenty athletes, seven on the women's side and thirteen men. The thirteen men's entries are tied for second-most of any team in the NCAA behind only Arkansas. Washington goes into nationals ranked 8th nationally on the men's side and 10th on the women's side, both season-highs.
Men's events will take place on Wednesday and Friday, and women's events go on Thursday and Saturday, with the exception of the decathlon and heptathlon competitions, as the decathlon goes Wednesday-Thursday, and the heptathlon Friday-Saturday.
The meet will be broadcast through ESPN, either streaming on ESPN+ or televised on ESPNU or ESPN2.
- Wednesday's televised window will be 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific time on ESPNU.
- Thursday will air on ESPN2 from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. PT
- Friday will air on ESPN2 from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. PT
- Saturday will air on ESPN2 from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. PT
The Husky men's squad hopes to add one more stellar championship meet to sit next to its fourth-place NCAA Indoor team finish, and its first-ever Pac-12 Championship. Last year, the men finished 12th at outdoors, scoring 20 points. That was the team's best finish since 1979 when the Huskies tied for fifth, which is the last top-10 finish for the men outdoors.
The women tied for 25th-place a year ago, and were 19th and 17th in the two seasons prior. A fourth-straight Top-25 finish would be a program record. The Huskies tied for 24th at the NCAA Indoor meet and were a program-best third at Pac-12s last month.
It's an experienced Husky squad, as sixteen of the twenty athletes have previously competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and of the four who have not, two competed at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Only Chandler Ault in the javelin and Jonathan Birchman in the 400m hurdles are getting their first taste of NCAA competition. Fifteen of the twenty were at NCAA Outdoors last year in Eugene, with nine of those 15 having made the podium a year ago. Joe Waskom is the defending NCAA Champion in the 1,500-meters, while Ida Eikeng and Kayley DeLay were both NCAA runners-up, DeLay competing for Yale.
Athletes reached Austin by surviving the West and East Preliminary Championships two weeks ago in Sacramento, Calif. and Jacksonville, Fla., respectively. Each site advanced the top-12 athletes or relays in every event on to Austin for fields of 24 in each event.
Team scores are compiled by individuals and relays finishing in the top-eight in their events. Points for the top eight places are the standard 10 for first-place, 8 for second, then 6-5-4-3-2-1 for third-through-eighth. The USTFCCCA All-America format remains the same this season, as the top-eight finishers in every event will be named First Team All-Americans, the 9-16 finishers will be Second Team All-Americans, and 17-24 will be honorable mention.
