AUSTIN, Texas – Pole vault is one event where anything can always happen, and one of those "anythings" today was Husky senior Jacob Englar delivering the meet of his career in his finale and tying for third-place on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Englar was ranked 22nd nationally but cleared a big new personal-best to become the first Husky this week on the podium at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
In addition to Englar's phenomenal night, the Husky men's team put five through to Friday's finals on the track. Nathan Green, Joe Waskom, and Luke Houser all moved through to a second-straight 1,500-meter final, Ed Trippas qualified for the finals of the steeplechase, and Cass Elliott earned his first career final in the 400-meter hurdles.
UW had a sixth finalist taken away due to protest, as Sam Ellis had qualified for the 800-meter final but he was ruled to have stepped on the lane lines before the break point, the only negative on an otherwise excellent opening day for the Huskies.
Englar Soars To Upset Bronze
A senior transfer from rival Washington State, Englar made a big impact in his one season, first making the NCAA Indoor meet where he was 13th, then taking second at the Pac-12 Championships to help UW clinch the team title. The Idaho native was 17th at NCAA Outdoors last year for WSU, but today he got in a groove.
Englar cleared his first bar of 16-10 ¾ on one attempt, and kept rolling from there. He made 17-4 ½ on a first attempt, then did the same with ease at 17-10 ½, a new outdoor PR. But that outdoor PR was quickly broken as Englar made 18-4 ½ on a first attempt, to virtually assure himself of his first podium finish. That clearance moves him to No. 4 all-time in school history. He was unable to get over the next height at 18-8 ¼, but only two competitors made that height and he finished in a two-way tie for third, earning 5.5 team points.
Five Finalists
For the second year in a row, the Huskies will have 25-percent of the field in the men's 1,500-meters final. The same trio that finished 1-5-7 a year ago are back in the final for Friday. Defending champ Joe Waskom and indoor mile champ Luke Houser finished 1-2 in the first of the two semifinals, going 3:39.52 and 3:39.72, respectively. Then in the next heat, Pac-12 champ Nathan Green was third in 3:39.69 to join his teammates. They'll race for hardware on Friday at 6:12 p.m. Pacific time.
Another ticket through to the finals was earned by Ed Trippas, who looked confident and comfortable in taking a late lead in his 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal and assuring himself of a top-five finish. Trippas shut it down late and took second in 8:38.26. Fifth a year ago when running for Princeton, Trippas is the first Husky men's steeple finalist since 2018.
Things kept rolling when Sam Ellis looked to have broken through to the final in the 800-meters, only later to be disqualified due to another team's protest. Ellis ran in last place through the first lap until he started climbing up on the outside lanes on the final backstretch. Over the final 200-meters, Ellis kept pushing up from sixth to second, and he came through for the second auto-qualifying spot in a time of 1:47.37, which was the second-fastest of the semis. Unfortunately he'll be denied a chance to finish his collegiate career in the final he earned.
The final ticket punched for the Dawgs tonight was Cass Elliott, in his third NCAA Outdoor appearance, breaking through to the long-awaited final. It took a School Record to get there, as Elliott ran a 49.13 to break his own record by 0.13 seconds, earning one of the time qualifiers to Friday's final. He's the first Husky finalist in the event since 1971.
Jonathan Birchman was hoping to stage an upset and join Elliott in the 400m hurdles final but he was unable to grab the big PR he would have needed. In his NCAA debut, he finished 23rd overall in 51.96 to earn Honorable Mention All-America.
The first final was the men's hammer throw, with junior Jayden White competing in the event for a third-straight year. White launched a season-best throw of 229-10 on his very first attempt, but he was unable to improve it on his next two. Right at the end of the third round, White was bumped to tenth, with only the top-nine advancing to get three final attempts. He was seeded just 17th coming in, so it was still a strong day at the office. White is now a six-time All-American as he earned a third Second Team honor today, to go with two First Team honors from the indoor weight throw, and one honorable mention.
Junior Chandler Ault, the Pac-12 javelin runner-up, made his NCAA debut today. In the first of the two flights of 12, Ault finished fourth with a best toss of 228-5, but after flight two that would drop to 15th overall, garnering a Second Team All-America honor for the first-year Dawg.
Ollie Thorner worked through the first five events of his second career NCAA Decathlon today. He opened up with a time of 11.13 seconds in the 100-meters and then had a long jump best of 21-9. His first PR of the competition came in the shot put, with a toss of 43-8 ¾. He carried that momentum to a 6-4 ¾ high jump, equaling his outdoor best. Thorner finished day one with a 49.03 time in the 400-meters, just .04 off his PR. He sits in 19th-place overall after the first day.
