Washington’s Winning Streak Halted by WSU, 2-1
May 05, 2023 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington (26-14, 11-10 Pac-12) came out on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel Friday night in the opening game of the Boeing Apple Cup Series matchup at Bailey-Brayton Field, falling to Washington State (27-17, 8-13 Pac-12) 2-1.
Husky starter Stu Flesland was dominant despite wearing the loss. The lefty allowed just two runs on five hits, striking out eight over seven full innings.
After cruising through the first four innings, Flesland ran into trouble in the fifth. After Kyle Russell flared a seeing-eye single to leadoff the frame, Elijah Hainline tagged a double to the wall in right-center. It was a close play at the plate but Russell was ruled safe after review.
Hainline then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came home when a balk was called on Flesland, putting the Cougars up 2-0 at the conclusion of the inning.
After the lefthander settled back in and recorded a scoreless sixth, the offense got going in the seventh to cut the deficit in half. With runners at the corners, Sam DeCarlo shot a sharp single the other way to score Johnny Tincher from third.
Coby Morales came inches from coming through in the clutch in the eighth but his potential game-tying double was robbed at the wall in dead center and Washington failed to complete the comeback.
QUICK HITS
• Stu Flesland III retired the first 13 Cougars he faced.
• Flesland's 7.0 innings matched his career high, accomplished two other times this season.
• Coby Morales extended his bases-reached streak to 20 games, the longest for a Husky since Nick Kahle also reached in 20-straight in 2019.
