SEATTLE – The Washington Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) announced four student-athlete recipients of the 2022-23 Core Values Awards.
Ulumoo Ale, Madison Huskey, Jack Walkey and Gabi Wickman were nominated and recognized for exemplifying the UW Athletics core values of grit, growth mindset, committed service, and humility.
Ulumoo Ale, Football
Ale is a junior defensive lineman on the football team. After graduating with his undergraduate degree he decided to do research and be a teacher's assistant for the anthropology department. He has been a leader and a great role model to his team by leading a 100-person lecture during this spring. Ale overcame injuries and challenging academics with resiliency. He is committed to his team and making it better by leading through example.
Madison Huskey, Softball
Fifth year outfielder Madison Huskey earned All-Pac-12 honors in her final season as a Husky and also became the first Washington softball student-athlete to earn a Gold Glove award. Though she was second on the team in home runs and RBI, Huskey constantly deflected praise to her teammates while leading Washington's run to the Women's College World Series. She is committed to people and, as an Equity and Inclusion Graduate Assistant, has enhanced the athletic department's DEI efforts through affinity groups, campus partnerships, community engagements and more. Huskey frequently presented in front of athletic department staff on important DEI initiatives and also served on the Committed Service Week council.
Jack Walkey, Men's Rowing
Walkey, a senior captain on the men's rowing team, most recently rowed on the Varsity 8+ that won silver at the 2023 Pac-12 Championships. He earned All-America honors following the season. He demonstrates grit by constantly pushing not only himself to improve but also making everyone in the boat and on the team a better oarsmen/oarswomen. Despite his exceptional abilities, Walkey always puts the team's success ahead of his individual achievements. His leadership and character demonstrate the values that define the ICA and UW's rowing team.
Gabi Wickman, Gymnastics
Wickman is a junior business major in UW's Foster School of Business. The gymnast has faced several injuries while at Washington and has approached each one with a positive and adaptable mindset. She goes to office hours to strive for excellence in her classes, which resulted in Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll recognition for the second consecutive year. On top of that, Wickman goes out of her way to help classmates succeed by leading study sessions and discussing difficult concepts. She consistently volunteers in the community and always seeks feedback from her peers, coaches, and professors to learn from every opportunity and make the biggest impact for her team.
In the fall of 2019, the University of Washington athletic department launched the Core Value Awards to celebrate and recognize how Husky student-athletes contribute to the UW community every day.
