Huskies Open Pac-12 Tournament Against Oregon State
May 10, 2023 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 5 Washington kicks off the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday against Oregon State with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Huskies earned the second overall seed in the tournament after a series win over Stanford last weekend. The winner of the Quarterfinal game between the Huskies and Beavers will go on to face the winner of Utah vs. Cal on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the game airing on ESPNU. The Championship game is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
30TH ANNIVERSARY OF WASHINGTON SOFTBALL
2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Washington softball. The Huskies first year as a program was in 1993. Head coach Heather Tarr has been a part of 24 of 30 seasons in the Purple and Gold as a player, manager and coach.
THE LAST TIME OUT
Washington went down to Palo Alto and won the series against then-No. 6 Stanford. The Cardinal won the first game in a pitcher's duel 2-1, but the Huskies fought back and won the second game 1-0 and game three 8-0 in a six inning run-rule. The Washington pitching staff was able to limit Stanford to eight total hits over the three-game series.
ALL-CONFERENCE NODS
Pac-12 awards came out on Wednesday morning and seven Huskies saw their names on the list for a total of eight honors.
First Team: Baylee Klingler, Ruby Meylan
Second Team: Madison Huskey, Sami Reynolds
Third Team: SilentRain Espinoza
All-Defensive Team: Rylee Holtorf
All-Freshman Team: Brooklyn Carter, Ruby Meylan
SENIORS SHINED ON SENIOR DAY
Last Sunday, the seniors shined in the series finale against Utah. Baylee Klingler, Madison Huskey, Sami Reynolds, SilentRain Espinoza, Jadelyn Allchin and Brooke Nelson combined for all nine of Washington's hits. Kelley Lynch also picked up the save.
NOT ACTING LIKE FRESHMAN
The four freshmen have contributed a lot to the Husky program so far in 2023. Alana Johnson is fifth on the team with 20 RBI and third with seven home runs. Ruby Meylan is nationally ranked in shutouts (6), strikeouts (171) and saves (6). Brooklyn Carter is a force on the base paths, leading the team and second in the conference with 24 stolen bases. Sydney Stewart has split time at catcher with a .279 average and seven RBI.
FUTURE PRODAWG
Last month, Baylee Klingler was selected as the second overall pick in the Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF) 2023 Draft by the Texas Smoke. Based out of Austin, the Texas Smoke are led by head coach Tori Tyson in the team's inaugural season. Klingler was also one of 14 current student-athletes drafted by Athletes Unlimited (AU) this past Monday. She will have the opportunity to sign with an organization once her eligibility at UW is completed following the 2023 season.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
Washington has compiled one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season. Against the Top 25, the Huskies have posted an 11-7 record with wins over Duke, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon and Utah. Entering the Pac-12 Tournament, Washington is ranked 10th in the RPI.
NO-NO X 2
On Feb. 23 Kelley Lynch threw her first career no-hitter, doing so against Bethune-Cookman at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Lynch allowed only one runner to reach base on a hit-by-pitch in the first inning. She struck out 13. Lynch and Ruby Meylan combined for the second no-hitter this season, doing so in game one at Oregon State on April 14. The Huskies have thrown 49 no-hitters in program history.
RECORD WATCH
Baylee Klingler is one grand slam away from setting the program record in career grand slams. The fifth-year senior has five so far - four of which came last season and one this year against Hofstra. Ruby Meylan is one save away from tying the program record for saves in a single season with seven with Tia Bollinger (2002). She needs two more to have the feat on her own.
INAUGURAL PAC-12 TOURNAMENT
Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium will serve as the host site for the inaugural Pac-12 Softball Tournament, which is set to make its debut from May 10-13, 2023. The four-day event will begin with a play-in game between the eighth and ninth-place teams in the regular-season standings on Wednesday. That winner will advance to an eight-team, single-elimination bracket with the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship being contested on the following three days. The winner of the Pac-12 Softball Tournament will receive the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Limited tickets are still available by visiting pac12.me/SBTix.
