Huskies Drop Series Finale at Arizona
April 08, 2023 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. β Washington was able to hold off the Arizona offense in the early going during Saturday's series finale but ultimately couldn't sustain, falling 13-1 at Hi Corbett Field.
Β
Jared Engman allowed two runs over four innings in defeat, while the Huskies emptied the bullpen with six relief arms used.
Β
After leaving a pair on in the first, Arizona jumped ahead in the second on Emilio Corona's two-run home run to left.
Β
Despite surrendering the early lead, the Huskies continued to tip toe around danger to keep things close. Engman got out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the third and stranded a runner in the fourth before handing the ball to Sam Boyle, who left two runners on in the fifth.
Β
Meanwhile, the Huskies got one of the two runs back in the top of the fifth. Sam DeCarlo led off with a sharp single before Cam Clayton's double put a pair in scoring position. Johnny Tincher was robbed of an extra base knock in left that would have tied the game but UW had to settle for a sac fly to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Β
The Huskies were unable to walk the tight rope in the sixth as a 2-out walk loaded the bases before Chase Davis blooped a single into right field, plating a pair to extend the Wildcat lead back out to 4-1.
Β
Arizona took advantage of some wildness on the mound for the Huskies, scoring a pair of runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and a passed ball.
Β
The Dawgs threatened in the eighth, putting a pair of runners on, but couldn't break through and the home team blew things open in their half, scoring 7 runs before closing things out in the ninth.
