SEATTLE -- In an already historic indoor season, the Husky track and field team looks to make another run at history as the NCAA Indoor Championships bring another phase of the season to a close. This Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Washington will have a program-record twenty entries to contend for team points, All-America honors, and championships.
The University of New Mexico is set to host the championships at the ABQ Convention Center. The meet schedule divides up the women's and men's events into afternoon and evening sessions each day, to better follow the team title races. With entries in both the men's heptathlon (Bruno Comin Pescador) and women's pentathlon (Ida Eikeng), Washington fans will be following from morning to night.
Friday starts at 9 a.m. Pacific time with the multi events, and then the first field event final featuring Huskies will be the women's pole vault at 1 p.m. Pacific. The women's track session begins at 3 p.m. Pacific with the women's mile run, featuring Anna Gibson. The first men's event aside from the heptathlon will be Jacob Englar in the men's pole vault at 5 p.m. Pacific time, then at 6 p.m., the men's track session starts with the men's mile semifinals, featuring six Dawgs.
Saturday follows a similar schedule with Comin Pescador starting his final three events at 9:30 a.m. Pacific, then the women's track session beginning at 3 p.m. and the men's session starting at 6 p.m.
The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+ with two sessions each day, and then the meet will re-air on ESPNU at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 12 and at 7 p.m. ET Monday, March 13.
Combining men's and women's entries, the Huskies have the fourth-most in the entire NCAA with twenty. The men are tied for the NCAA lead with 13 with Arkansas, while the women have seven entries. The 13 men's entries are a program record, while the seven for the women equals the program record from 2020 and 2005.
Team placing as always is based upon scores put up by the individuals and relays. Every individual event and relay awards points for the top-eight finishes, with 10 points for first, 8 for second, 6 for third, then 5-4-3-2-1 for places four through eight. The USTFCCCA All-America format also remains the same, with First Team status for top-eight finishers, and Second Team status for 9-16 finishers.
The men's team has been ranked second for the past several weeks, after making history with the first No. 1 team ranking back in January. Washington finished 21st last year on the men's side, and has three top-10 finishes in program history, most recently a sixth-place finish in 2016 which is the highest all-time.
The women's team also had a history-making No. 2 ranking early in the season, and has remained in the top-10 for several weeks now, currently at No. 7. The women did not score at this meet a year ago. In 2020, the last time UW had seven entries, the meet was canceled one day before starting due to Covid-19. Sixteen points is the most scored at NCAA Indoors in women's team history, in 2016 (13th-place) and in 1988 (8th-place).
