Huskies Dominant on the Mound in Doubleheader Sweep of Northern Colorado
March 04, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – One day after the Washington (8-2) offense registered a school-record 32 runs in the series opener against Northern Colorado (2-7), the Husky pitching staff carried the load on Saturday as UW registered a doubleheader sweep of the Bears to secure the series.
Game One | UW 6, UNC 0
The Huskies made quick work of the Bears in the early game, with Kiefer Lord and Grant Cunningham combining to face the minimum in a 6-0 Washington win.
Lord had a perfect game going when he was lifted after the sixth inning. The junior flamethrower struck out 10 of the 18 batters he faced. Cunningham's lone blemish was a single that was immediately erased on a double play. He picked up the saving after delivering three scoreless.
A sacrifice fly from Coby Morales and an AJ Guerrero RBI single up the middle got UW on the board in the first, going ahead 2-0.
Cam Clayton and Johnny Tincher doubled that advantage with authority in the second, sending back-to-back jacks over the left field fence to make it 4-0 in favor of the Huskies.
Tincher hammered his second big fly of the day into the visitor bullpen in the fourth and Christian Dicochea added a final run in the eighth with a single the center to score Morales as Washington closed out a quick early game of the twin bill.
Game Two | UW 9, UNC 1
Washington completed the doubleheader sweep in the late game, riding another strong performance on the hill to a 9-1 victory over the Bears.
Stu Flesland III got his second win of the year, surrendering a single run over six complete, striking out nine along the way. Freshman Sam Boyle earned his first save with three scoreless innings of relief to close the door, allowing a single hit with three stikeouts.
After a quiet first, the Husky offense got back up and running in the second. McKay Barney's sharp single to right got UW on the board before Sam DeCarlo hammered an RBI double off the left field wall. Colin Blanchard followed with a sac fly to center and just like that it was 3-0 for the home team.
Guerrero added to the lead with a sacrifice to right in the third and brought home another run in the fifth with a double the other way to score Tincher. The Husky left fielder eventually came around himself after UNC starter Dylan Smith's pickoff attempt sailed into center.
Northern Colorado got in on the fun with their first run of the day in the sixth but a Will Simpson bomb off the batter's eye in center extinguished any momentum.
DeCarlo dropped in his third hit of the day in the seventh, a bloop single to center that brought home Michael Snyder to bring the score to its resting place at 9-1.
