LAS VEGAS (AP) – Moses Wood and Keion Brooks Jr. both scored over 20 points, but Washington fell to No. 20 Colorado State, 86-81, on Saturday.
"We're close," said Head Coach Mike Hopkins. "At the end of the day, we need to rebound better and we have to defend better."
Brooks hit a layup with 1:31 left to knot the game at 78-78, but the Huskies (4-3) were unable to retake the lead against the unbeaten Rams.
The Huskies had a seven-point lead midway through the second half, one of several in the game.
Wood led all scorers with 21 points and also had eight rebounds. Brooks had 20 points with seven rebounds, Paul Mulcahy finished with 14 and Sahvir Wheeler contributed 13 points and 12 assists for his first double-double since November of 2022.
Washington opened the game by taking an early 7-1 lead while forcing Colorado State to miss its first four shots. Sparked by Wood and Mulcahy, the Huskies used a 15-5 run to retake the lead, 27-26.
The teams traded baskets from there, but it was Washington being able to take advantage of Isaiah Stevens' absence, after committing his third foul with a little more than five minutes left in the first half. The Huskies built a seven-point lead before heading into the locker room with a 44-41 lead at halftime.
Washington got a lot of its production from long range, as it hit 7 of 14 (50%) from three-point range in the first half, while it also outscored Colorado State in transition, 12-5.
Mulcahy set up a pair of Franck Kepnang dunks to start the second half.
