November 16, 2023 | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – Following a three-game homestand, Washington (2-1) will play three of its next four games in Las Vegas, starting with the Continental Tire Main Event this weekend.
UW next plays Friday night against a Xavier team which advanced to the Sweet 16 last season. The game will tip off at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Roxy Bernstein and Sean Farnham will call the game on TV while Tim Bickford and Jason Hamilton will call the action on the Husky Sports Network and locally on Sports Radio KJR 950 AM.
The Huskies will play another NCAA Tournament team on Sunday against either San Diego State or Saint Mary's depending on the results of Friday's games.
Single game tickets for the entire 2023-24 season went on sale on Tuesday. The Huskies return to Hec Ed on Nov. 28 for a tilt with UC San Diego.
The Matchup
The Huskies and Musketeers meet for the first time since 1999 and third overall. They have split the previous two meetings, the first of which came in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Washington aims to win an in-season tournament for the second consecutive year after winning the Wooden Legacy last November with wins over Fresno State and Saint Mary's.
Last Time Out
Keion Brooks Jr. tallied his second consecutive double-double but Washington fell to Nevada 83-76 on Sunday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Huskies shot 48 percent, including 51 percent in the second half. They held Nevada to 2 of 14 shooting from three-point range over 40 minutes. In 2022-23 the Huskies were 13-2 when holding opponents to under 70 points and 10-3 when scoring over 70 points.
Top Dawgs
Keion Brooks Jr. averaged 24.3 points per game over the first week of the season, which ranks first on the Pac-12 leaderboard. He is currently in the top-five nationally in total scoring.
The Returners
UW is one of three Pac-12 teams to return multiple All-Conference honorees, behind only USC. Preseason first-team All-Conference choice Keion Brooks Jr. headlines the core of returners as the leading returning scorer in the entire Pac-12. He averaged 17.7 points and 6.7 rebounds to earn Second Team All-Pac-12 honors. Braxton Meah is back for another season in purple and gold after shooting over 70 percent in 2022-23 to lead the league and set a new single-season Husky record. He was selected to the All-Defensive team after averaging 1.6 blocks per game.
Koren Johnson enters his sophomore season following a stellar freshman campaign in which he racked up 34 steals, which were tied for second on the team. Franck Kepnang adds depth to the frontcourt after missing the majority of the 2022-23 season due to injury.
The Newcomers
Kentucky grad transfer Sahvir Wheeler highlights an experienced group of newcomers. Wheeler twice led the SEC in assists, both times ranking in the top five in the NCAA with over six helpers per game.
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Nebraska), Nate Calmese (Lamar), Anthony Holland (Fresno State) Paul Mulcahy (Rutgers) and Moses Wood (Portland) also arrived in Seattle via the transfer portal. Four-star guard Wesley Yates III headlines the freshman class of four.
Signing Day
Head Coach Mike Hopkins and the Huskies signed four-star guard Casmir Chavis to a letter of intent on National Signing Day Wednesday, the Huskies' first commit in the 2024 class.
