Huskies Win in Pullman for First Time Since 1996
November 05, 2022 | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. – Twice erasing a one-goal deficit, Washington completed the comeback Saturday afternoon at Washington State, earning a 3-2 win at Lower Field.
It was the first victory in Pullman for UW since 1996, a year in which none of the current members of the Husky squad had even been born yet.
Summer Yates scored her 27th goal in a Husky kit in the victory, moving the fifth-year senior into a tie for third most ever at UW. Kelsey Branson bagged the winner, the fifth goal of her freshman season and fourth in Pac-12 play.
The Cougars got off to a fast start, with Margie Detrizio burying Grayson Lynch's corner kick delivery into the upper 90 in the 9th minute.
Eight minutes later, Shae Holmes sent a long ball over the top and McKenzie Weinert used a relentless effort to get on the end of it, bulging the back of the net in the 17th minute to even the score at a goal apiece.
WSU regained the lead in the 31st minute as Detrizio slipped a ball to a wide open Lily Boyden in the middle of the 18 and Boyden calmly passed the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-1.
However, UW once again had a response, leveling the score in the 38th minute. Collecting a loose ball at the endline, Branson fed Weinert for a shot. The attempt was blocked but found the feet of Yates, who scored on the vacant goal to bring the score to 2-2 at the half.
Right from the whistle the Dawgs came out of the halftime break on the front foot and after a pair of near misses, Branson put UW on top in the 70th minute.
The goal came as a result of a beautiful combination from the Dawgs. On an attempted clearance, Claudia Longo used the deftest of touches to put the ball into Elena Palacios' path. Palacios sent a curving ball over the top and Branson beat the offside trap, brought the ball down and hit the side netting, pushing Washington ahead 3-2.
The Huskies were then able to salt away the final 20 minutes of the match, capturing a historic victory at Lower Field.
