No. 3 Huskies Remain Undefeated with 2-0 Win at Portland
September 24, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The match started off slowly, with neither side being able to create many dangerous moments. After 45 minutes, UW had 6 shots to the Pilots' 5, while Portland had the advantage in shots on goal, 3-1. Of the four shots on net in the first half, none of them created too many problems for either goalkeeper. With possession also even at the half, the Huskies would regroup and come out inspired for the second half.
After peppering the Portland goal with five shots and three on net, Kendall Burks would provide the breakthrough goal for the second straight match. UW won a free kick in the Pilots' half and Charlie Ostrem lifted in a deep service to the far post. Burks got his head on it and put it over the reach of the Portland goalkeeper.

It was the second straight match with a goal for Burks and the second straight match with an assist for Ostrem.
The Pilots would not go down without a fight, as they came back to put pressure on the Husky back line. Their best chance came in the 69th minute when they had a clean look at goal, but Sam Fowler stepped up and made a clutch save to keep them off the scoresheet.
On the ensuing counterattack, Nick Scardina worked the ball into space past midfield and was tackled from behind. The referee gave Luke Hendel his second yellow card of the match, leaving Portland with 10 men for the rest of the match.

The momentum would be back with Washington the rest of the match and soon after, the Huskies would double their lead. Christian Soto would win the ball off of a Portland goal kick and find a wide open Kalani Kossa-Rienzi in space, who calmly finished for his first career goal. That would put the match out of reach for the Pilots and secure the win for UW.
