No. 2 Huskies Stay Unbeaten on Golden Goal by Dylan Teves
September 30, 2021 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- In its toughest test to date, the No. 2 Washington men's soccer team came out on top once again, using a golden goal in overtime from Dylan Teves to defeat No. 13 San Diego State by a score of 1-0.
After a competitive and even 90 minutes, the two teams found themselves deadlocked at 0-0, forcing the fourth overtime match of the season for the Huskies.
In the 94th minute, Charlie Ostrem worked himself into space along the left side and put in a deep cross into the box. It found the feet of Nick Scardina, who then pushed it along to Teves, who beat the keeper to end the match and push UW to 8-0-0 (1-0-0) on the season.
"It feels really good," Teves said of the win. "They're undefeated. They always pose different challenges and our team came through when we needed it most."
With the Aztecs being the only other Pac-12 team ranked in both the TopDrawerSoccer and United Soccer Coaches polls, it was poised to be a challenging night for the Huskies in their conference opener. While UW would jump out to a 5-0 advantage in shots, SDSU would come right back at them. After 45 minutes, the Huskies had seven shots to the Aztecs' three. In the second half, SDSU would find more opportunities, getting off five shots, although Sam Fowler and the defense were up to the challenge.
It was the second straight shutout for Washington and the team's fifth of the season.
"I thought Sam Fowler, Achille Robin and Ryan Sailor were fantastic there, just as being a real base," head coach Jamie Clark said of the defensive effort. "When they needed to, Charlie Ostrem chipped in and Kendall Burks chipped in. That base is really good and the midfield works really hard. We're hard to break down."
Golden goal overtimes are no stranger to these Huskies, with half of their matches now having gone to extra time. They are 4-0 in overtime matches, with Teves also scoring the golden goal in the team's first match of the season -- a 2-1 win over UC Davis. No matter the opponent, however, UW simply finds a way to win.
"The margins are tight. We're playing very good teams and we're staying confident and we push until the end," Clark said. "We're hoping at some point the dam breaks. That's our hope -- it isn't always that way. We think we create enough chances that at some point, something will go in. That's maybe why overtimes are going our way. We're certainly fit, certainly brave towards the end. Now there's belief, which is more important than anything else."
Now sitting at 8-0-0, Washington has tied the 2006 team for the best start in school in history.
The No. 2 Huskies are back in action on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. against No. 23 UCLA. Tickets can be purchased here.
