September 16, 2021 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington women's soccer team defeated Seattle University 1-0 on Thursday night at Championship Field. Helena Reischling's game-winning goal in the second overtime period ended the game and gave the Huskies the first inaugural WAC/101 Club Cup.
With the win, Washington improved to 2-4-1 on the year while the loss dropped Seattle U to 5-2-1.
It was looking like a second consecutive draw for the Huskies until Reischling's deep strike from outside of the box in the 106th minute banged off the left post and into the back of the net. Olivia Van der Jagt and Ameera Hussen both assisted on the play.
The Huskies were in control for the better part of the game, outshooting the Redhawks 20-6 as well as recording six corner kicks.
Through 45 minutes, UW had 10 shots in total with four on goal but couldn't beat the SU goalkeeper. Ameera Hussen gave a valiant effort with a strike from outside the box the just sailed left of goal in the 34th minute.
McKenzie Weinert was aggressive as well, constantly finding herself with the ball in the final third, having two shots in the first half and ending up with three for the game. Hussen finished with five shots while Ruby Hellstrom had four shots as well.
Olivia Sekany was rock solid in goal for UW with three saves on the night.
