Guerrero Dominates Utah as Huskies Pick up Victory

SEATTLE -- The Washington Huskies got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, riding a dominant performance from Tyson Guerrero en route to a 2-1 win over the Utah Utes.

Making his 10th start of the season, Guerrero kept Utah hitters off balance all afternoon, picking up seven strikeouts in his 6.1 innings of work, while allowing three hits and two walks (1 of which was intentional).

After inducing three groundouts in a 1-2-3 first inning, Guerrero struck out two Utes to end the second. He would wind up retiring the first 11 Utes in order before surrendering a two-out double. After issuing an intentional walk, Guerrero struck out the next batter to finish the frame.

He picked up another strikeout in a 1-2-3 fifth before receiving some run support from the Husky offense.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Christian Jones roped a 1-2 breaking ball the other way for a single. Ramon Bramasco dropped down his 10th sacrifice bunt of the season to put Jones on second. Kaiser Weiss then doubled into the right field corner to score Jones and give UW a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies added a crucial insurance run in the seventh inning, started by a Christian Dicochea double. Preston Viltz came in to pinch run and went to third on a groundout before scoring on a Sac Fly from Christian Jones to put UW up 2-0.

Utah got back a run in the eighth on a groundout that scored a runner from third. Stu Flesland III came in to relieve Stefan Raeth and got the last out of the inning.

Davis Delorefice came in for the save in the ninth, protecting a 2-1 lead. Despite a leadoff double, Delorefice got the next batter to fly out before striking out the next two Utes to end the game and strand the runner on second. It was his sixth save of the season.

The rubber game between Washington and Utah will Sunday at noon, with UW honoring 13 graduating seniors 30 minutes prior to first pitch.
