March 23, 2021 | Men's Golf
EUGENE- Senior Noah Woolsey recorded his highest finish of the season on Tuesday as he was runner-up at the annual Duck Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon at the par-71 Eugene Country Club. Washington as a team finished fourth overall with a 24-over 876 (289-294-293) for its second-straight top five showing of the season.
Â
The Huskies also saw senior Henry Lee finish in the top 10, tying for sixth, for its first tournament with two top-10 student-athlete performances.
Â
"Noah played a really good round today and really did all he could, finishing second," said head coach Alan Murray. "Henry also put together a good score to get another top 10 finish for us. Petr struggled a little bit but held it together and ended up counting in our final score. Jan just had a tough day at the office. Overall, we just scrapped and fought and did as well as we could really. We quickly head to Stanford for The Goodwin which is a really strong field and we're looking forward to getting back on the course."
Â
Woolsey showcased his steady play throughout the two-day 54-hole event as he did not post a round above par. The senior finished with a final scorecard of 4-under 209 (69-71-69) for his best effort this season. It is the sixth career top five finish and seventh career top 10 scorecard.
Â
"The course was very similar to Seattle Golf Club, which we practice at, and I was very comfortable with the weather and the set up down in Eugene," said Woolsey. It wasn't my best week tee-to-green in regards to ball striking, but I was able to get around the course very well and putted well with a good attitude and that helped a lot. Also, while it would have been great to win, it's nice to go down to Oregon and finish higher than all the Oregon guys individually. I've got a lot of work to go and I think I took a step in the right direction this week."
Â
Woolsey was nearly perfect over the final 18 as he opened the front nine with a 1-under thanks to a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. He opened the back nine with another birdie and his only error came on the 11th with a bogey on the par-11. Quickly responding, Woolsey went back to 1-under with his birdie on the par-5 13th hole. He matched his day one score and finished just two strokes behind Hugo Townsend from Boise State who took the individual title at 6-under.
Â
Lee also recorded his best finish of the season with a 3-over 216 (71-73-72) to tie for sixth. Lee moved up four spots on the leaderboard during Tuesday's final round with his 1-over 72. The senior committed just the one blemish on the par 3 fifth hole and made par on the remaining 17. He has now recorded 12 career top 10 performances, which ranks tied for 10th all-time at UW.
Â
"I feel very privileged to be included in the top 10Â all time for career top 10 performances," said Lee. "Honestly my game was similar to Noah's. I didn't hit well of the tee, but knowing the course, I knew where to not hit it and I knew where back to get to par. I tried to stay as positive as well, that just helped me gain shots where I could get them and end up finishing where I did."
Â
Competing as an individual, freshman Taehoon Song, also made moves during the final round, climbing five spots into a tie for 24th with his 9-over 222 (78-71-73) Senior Jan Schneider posted a 15-over 228 (71-73-81) to tie for 47th while sophomore Petr Hruby carded a 19-over 232 (78-79-75), tying for 64th. Rounding out the Husky crew was freshman Teddy Lin as he tied for 72nd with his 22-over 235 (76-82-77).
Â
The Huskies waste no time as they return to the course Thursday at the annual Goodwin Classic hosted by Stanford, March 25-27.
