SEATTLE - As she continues to pile up victories at the No. 1 singles spot, senior Vanessa Wong was honored this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the UTR National Player of the Week. The award honors the player who raised their Universal Tennis Rating the greatest amount over the past week.
Last week the Huskies hosted the Arizona schools and Wong made quick work of both opponents to improve to 11-1 on the season in singles. On Friday, she stopped Arizona's Kayla Wilkins, 6-1, 6-2. On Sunday, Wong had a 6-3, 6-2 win over 37th-ranked Ilze Hattingh of Arizona State and also had a 6-0 win in doubles with Sedona Gallagher over the 50th-ranked duo of Hattingh and Lauryn John-Baptiste.
The wins raised Wong's Universal Tennis Rating from a 10.38 to a 10.75.
Wong is the second Husky in as many years to win the national award. Last year, the first year the award was given out, Natsuho Arakawa won the award on Feb. 18.
