Van Der Jagt Scores As Huskies Fall To No. 8 UCLA
October 21, 2021 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington women's soccer team fell 3-1 to No. 8 UCLA (13-0-2, 5-0-2) on a rainy Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium. Olivia Van der Jagt scored the lone goal for the Huskies (4-7-3, 2-3-2) off an assist from MaKayla Woods in the 75th minute.
The Huskies recorded 18 shots on the night, the second most so far this season, and the nine shots on goal were tied for a season high.
UCLA opened the scoring early, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime after goals by Reilyn Turner and a penalty conversion from Mia Fishel.
The Dawgs began the second half aggressively, getting into the final third of the UCLA defense consistently. The Huskies were rewarded for their hard work when Van der Jagt scored for her second goal in as many games.
On a corner kick played in by Summer Yates, the ball rattled around until Woods corralled the loose ball, finding Van der Jagt in the middle of the box, who slotted it home. It was Van der Jagt's second goal of the season and the 11th of her UW career. Woods' assist on the play was her first of the year.
The Bruins were able to push across a final goal as Fishel scored for the second time a few minutes later, bringing the UCLA lead back to two goals.
The Huskies battled throughout the match, creating many opportunities, and earning good looks on goal. Lauren Brzykcy, the Bruin goalkeeper was difficult to beat as she had eight saves in the match.
Summer Yates recorded seven shots on the night, a season high, including four on target. Ruby Hellstrom had three shots in the contest, two on goal. Olivia Sekany recorded five saves in net for UW.
The Huskies will be back home on Sunday, as the team honors its seniors, facing off against No. 5 USC at 12:00 p.m. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
