SEATTLE -- Former Husky Amber Melgoza has signed a professional contract to play in Italy this fall.
"I can't wait to play next season professionally in Battipaglia, Italy," Melgoza said. "A huge thank you to my family and friends for always supporting me. It's going to be an amazing experience for me on and off the court."
"We are so proud and happy for Amber signing a professional contract to play basketball overseas in Italy," head coach Jody Wynn said. "She will be playing in the top Italian division and able to compete against WNBA-level talent."
Melgoza has signed on to join the club PB63 on the team O.ME.P.S. Givova Battipaglia based in Battipaglia, Italy.
"Amber leaves UW as one of the greatest players in Husky history and has a long and bright pro career ahead," Wynn said. "There is no doubt in my mind that Amber has what it takes to play in the WNBA, and this is a great first step in her professional basketball journey."
Melgoza finished her Husky career averaging 14.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She was one of just two players to start all 30 games during her senior year, finishing the year averaging 17.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Melgoza finished eighth on UW's All-Time Leading Scorer List with 1,717 career points, and was the third UW player to score 500+ points in three seasons.
"I'm really excited to take this next step and compete against so many great players," Melgoza said. "The league is very competitive which can help me in so many different aspects in developing my game at a professional level. Been dreaming of this moment since I've been little."
