Washington Takes Down #14 Oregon State
March 07, 2020 | Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington earned their second-highest score of the season while adding seven individual titles in a win against #14 Oregon State. A season-high vault score and an individual winner in each event highlighted the first meet of the two-meet weekend for the GymDawgs.
"Tonight's team performance in Corvallis was an away competition that we always knew we were capable of," said assistant coach Ralph Rosso. "The bars team started us off strong, Geneva had a perfect score on vault, the floor team once again flexed their strength, and the beam team capitalized on a high pressure situation."
Geneva Thompson led the way on vault for the fifth meet in a row by earning a career-high 9.950 and helping the GymDawgs earn their best vault score since January with a 49.200. Madison Copiak finished with a 9.900 and the second best score for Washington, also a career-high score.

Copiak then led the way on bars by earning a 9.900 to take the individual title and help Washington earn a 49.200. Five out of six GymDawgs finished above the 9.800 threshold.
Β
On beam, three GymDawgs shared the individual title, with Meaghan Ruttan, Maya Washington, and Hannah Vandenkolk each earning a 9.900. This was a career-high mark for Ruttan by a tenth of a point and also her first individual title as a GymDawg. This also marked the fourth meet in a row that Vandenkolk has reached a 9.900 on beam. Washington's score helped her earn a career-high mark in the all around with a 39.375.
"What a performance from Maya," said Rosso. "Only the second time in her career competing in the all around and she rocked it."
Β
On floor, Kristyn Hoffa earned her second-highest score of the season with a 9.950, good for the individual title. That makes it seven meets in a row where the Senior has scored a 9.900 or higher on floor. Evanni Roberson took home a 9.900 on floor, helping the senior to her eighth all around title in nine competitions with a score of 39.425. Michaela Nelson was in the floor lineup for the first time this season, earning a 9.850.
Β
"Two competitions in one weekend is important because it prepares us for back to back competition at NCAA Regionals," said Rosso. "This will bring us confidence and knowledge about what we are capable of in multiple days because the ultimate goal at Regionals is to qualify for the NCAA National Championships."
The GymDawgs will compete in a quad meet on Sunday against #7 Denver, San Jose State, and Alaska.
"We shouldn't see major changes for our Denver lineup," said Rosso. "We want to do what we did at OSU one more time and gain another great away score to increase our rankings for Pac-12 and Regional seedings."
