GymDawgs Post Second-Highest Score in Program History
March 02, 2020 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE - A second perfect 10 on beam for Evanni Roberson and a beam rotation in which all five scoring gymnasts earned marks of 9.900 or higher helped the GymDawgs grab the best beam score in program history while also earning the second-best team score UW has ever had. Despite the record setting night, Washington couldn't maintain their unbeaten streak in conference meets as #4 Utah edged out the GymDawgs, 197.675-197.600.Β
"What an amazing night for UW Gymnastics," said assistant coach Ralph Rosso. "Earning the second-highest team score in program history is not only great for our program, but more importantly for our young women who work tirelessly day in and day out."
The GymDawgs started on vault, where Geneva Thompson earned the top Washington score for the fourth meet in a row with a 9.875.Β Evanni Roberson chipped in a 9.850 on vault to help her take the all around individual title, her seventh in eight competitions.Β Maya Washington also made her collegiate debut on vault against Utah and the GymDawgs earned a 49.050 during the first rotation.
It was during the second rotation on bars where the GymDawgs hit their stride and didn't look back. Each gymnast scored above the 9.800 mark as Maya Washington and Geneva Thompson each matched their career-high marks of 9.900. Sophomore Brenna Brooks earned a career-high 9.875 and Madison Copiak also chipped in a 9.900 to help Washington earn a 49.425, the highest bars score of the season.Β
On beam, each gymnast either matched or set a new career-high. Evanni Roberson led the way, matching the career-high 10.00 she set last month, which was the first perfect 10 on beam in Washington program history. Maya Washington and Madison Copiak each earned a 9.925, which was a career-high mark for Washington. Michaela Nelson and Hannah Vandenkolk each added a 9.900, with Nelson earning a new career-high. Brenna Brooks, who led off the rotation, earned a 9.875, her second career-high score of the meet.Β
"It was a night filled with career-highs, record event scores, and a perfect 10!" said Rosso. "Our team is made up of amazing, confident, and talented women!"
Brooks led off again on floor, matching a career-high 9.850. Amara Cunningham added a 9.900, Maya Washington posted a 9.925, and Kristyn Hoffa closed out the event with a 9.925 as well. This marked the sixth straight meet in which Hoffa has scored a 9.900 or higher on floor. The GymDawgs earned a score of 49.475, tying the season-high score for the team. Each gymnast scored above the 9.800 mark, making it four total events this season in which that threshold has been met by each GymDawg in the lineup. Three of those events came against Utah.
"On each event, every routine kept getting better and better and we could not have done that without the electric crowd tonight," said Rosso. "Their energy gave us tremendous strength in our performances!"
Washington is back in action against Oregon State on Friday in Corvallis.
