Dawgs Down UC Irvine To Take Series, Meggs Picks Up Win No. 300
March 01, 2020 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The University of Washington baseball team (7-3) took Sunday's rubber match with UC Irvine (5-6), 12-2, at Husky Ballpark and gave head coach Lindsay Meggs his 300th win at the UW in doing so. Meggs becomes just the third coach in program history to hit the 300-win milestone, joining Ken Knutson and Bob MacDonald.
"Obviously it's nice to win another series," said Meggs. "Any time you can get two out of three you're heading in the right direction and it was nice to see our guys answer back after having a tough day yesterday. I'm very happy for our guys."
The Anteaters put a run on the board in the first, but the Dawgs responded with a seven-run second inning and never looked back, scoring twice in the fourth before tacking on three more to win the series.
Will Simpson had a monster day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 after ripping a pair of doubles. His day was highlighted by a bases-clearing double in the eighth to put his RBI tally at six on the afternoon. Noah Hsue also had a two-hit day and scored a pair of runs. Braiden Ward crossed home three times and Christian Dicochea tallied two RBI.
In the UW's seven-run second inning, Ramon Bramasco laid down a squeeze to bring Christian Dicochea home.
Logan Gerling got his third start of the season on the hill and the junior right-hander put together a solid outing. He allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out three in 4.0 innings. The Huskies then turned it over to the bullpen and called upon sophomore David Rhodes to work the next 4.0 innings. Rhodes was impressive, fanning four and surrendering just one run on three hits to pick up the win. Jack DeCooman pitched a scoreless ninth to close things out.
UW will take a day off before welcoming Portland for a mid-week match-up Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark, the first of three Dollar Dog Nights this season. The Pilots and Huskies will get underway at 6:05 p.m.
