No. 1 UW Women Headed To Vegas To Face No. 18 USC
February 26, 2020 | Women's Rowing
The No. 1-ranked Washington women's rowing team, reigning NCAA champion, opens its 2020 spring schedule this Saturday, Feb. 29, as the Huskies take onΒ fellow Pac-12 teamΒ USC, ranked No. 18 in the preseason poll, at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev.
Β
The UW women, ranked No. 1 in the newly-released preseason Pocock CRCA poll presented by USRowing, have opened their spring seasonΒ against USCΒ at Lake Las Vegas the last three years, and in fact, have been to the venue twice each of the last three years. They'll return again this season in April.
Β
"There is something really special about opening your season with a fellow Pac-12 team at this beautiful oasis in the desert," fourth-year head coach Yasmin Farooq said. "It's no one's home turf. Just a one-on-one, 2,000 meter match-up where we are all reminded about what we've been working so hard for all winter -- and why this sport is so challenging and special."
Β
The Huskies enter 2020 with a youthful squad, having lost six of the nine members of the 2019 NCAA champion varsity eight to either graduation or 2020 Olympics selection. Five of nine from the NCAA second varsity eight lineup and three of five from the four also return.
Β
Here's a schedule of this Saturday's racing at Lake Las Vegas (updated Friday at 7:00 p.m. PT), in a regatta that also features four men's programs. All of the three events involving UW are head-to-head vs. USC:
Β
9:00 a.m. β Varsity Four (two UW entries)
9:20 a.m. β Second Varsity Eight
9:40 a.m. β Varsity Eight

UW and USC have squared off in the season-opener on Lake Las Vegas each of the last three seasons, with Washington winning all three races each year. The Huskies have also raced against Ohio State and Michigan last April, as well as vs. Texas and Michigan in 2018.
Β
"It's the perfect setting for the first race of the season," Farooq said, "and now it's an established tradition for Washington and USC. We'll be racing there again in April along with Wisconsin, Duke, UCLA, Washington State and Cal.
Β
"It's aΒ an excellent course and aΒ neutral site," she continued. "And because it'sΒ Las Vegas,Β there's a direct flight there from everywhere. It's a great draw as a fan and spectator-friendly site."
Β
NEXT UP:Β Following this Saturday's racing in Las Vegas, the Huskies will have some time to prepare for the 119th annual Class Day Regatta, March 21 on Montlake Cut. The UW women's next action against outside competition is at the San Diego Crew Classic April 4-5, as well as in the Husky Open on April 4.
