No. 1 UW Women Open Season With Sweep Of No. 18 USC
February 29, 2020 | Women's Rowing
HENDERSON, Nev. – The No. 1-ranked Washington women's rowing team opened up the 2020 season Saturday with wins in all three races vs. No. 18 USC on Lake Las Vegas.
Washington, the defending NCAA champion, beat the Trojans in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four.
The UW varsity lineup included just one rower (seven seat Teal Cohen) and the coxswain (senior Marley Avritt) from the varsity eight crew that won the NCAA Championship last spring, but the Huskies won their race vs. USC by several lengths of open water. The UW's time was 6:29.5, with USC crossing the line in 6:43.5.
"The first race of the season is always an exciting time to test all of the work we have been putting in throughout winter," Avritt said. "It is also our first opportunity to fully plan and execute an all-out 2k against another team. With this team, and especially the 1V being filled with a lot of new, young faces we really took advantage of taking this opportunity, trying something new, and even taking some risks.
"Everyone loves racing, and the thrill that comes with it, but today I really loved being about to do something new with a pretty much all new group," Avritt added. "Everyone really stepped up, and we were able to test our fitness together. This was the first race of the season and it was very early, but I think the way we stepped up and really went for it today is a good sign going into the rest of the season."
Washington's second varsity eight won its race in wire-to-wire fashion, crossing the finish line nearly 14 seconds ahead of the USC shell, in a time of 6:37.0. The Husky 2V lineup was also young, with five sophomores among the nine members.
"I'm super grateful that we had the opportunity to come out here in February and throw down against another Pac-12 team so early in the season," said senior Dana Brooks, the 2V8+ coxswain. "The timing of this race is always awesome because it gives us something tangible to look forward to throughout winter training and I think the piece today exceeded our expectations.
"We found a solid rhythm and swing, and it was over before we knew it," Brooks added. "It just feels so great to race again, and I'm stoked for the rest of the season."
In the first race of the day, Washington entered two crews against USC in the varsity four. The UW "A" entry, coxed by Nina Castagna and stroked by Mackenna Cameron, won with a time of 7:21.4, about 10 seconds ahead of the USC four. Washington's B entry finished in third place, with a time of 7:34.4.
NEXT UP: The Huskies will have some time to prepare for the 119th annual Class Day Regatta, March 21 on Montlake Cut. The UW women's next action against outside competition is at the San Diego Crew Classic April 4-5, as well as in the Husky Open on April 4.
