SEATTLE โ One of the highlights of the Husky volleyball winter season comes this weekend as Washington sends a huge group to the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Seven Huskies will make the trip for the three-day tryout that can lead to U.S. National Team program consideration.
ย
Making the trip will be Shannon Crenshaw, Samantha Drechsel, Marin Grote, Claire Hoffman, Ella May Powell, Lauren Sanders, and Sophie Summers. This will be the first experience at the Tryouts for Grote and Summers, while Crenshaw, Drechsel, Hoffman and Powell all took part last year, and Sanders has taken part for the past two years.
ย
Taking place this Friday through Sunday, the tryout will evaluate athletes from 94 colleges from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team (CNT) program.
ย
Last season, Powell went on to play on the U.S. Junior National Team for the World Championships in Mexico, and Powell, Sanders, and Drechsel all took part in the CNT-Anaheim training block. 2019 seniors Kara Bajema and Avie Niece played in the tryout and were chosen for the U.S. roster for the World University Games in Italy.
ย
"We're thrilled to again send a large group of Huskies to Colorado Springs for the US Women's National Team Open Tryout," said Husky Head Coach Keegan Cook. "I'd like to especially thank the Tyee Club and our administration for their continued support of the development of our student-athletes.
ย
"Kara, Avie, Ella May, Sam, and Lauren all had opportunities to represent the United States last summer in various CNT programs around the world.ย These are unique opportunities and give our student-athletes a vision of their futures, a larger perspective of the world, and a chance to represent something bigger than themselves."
ย
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT, while Saturday's two sessions are at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The final session on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff to participate in a "USA" training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 10:30 a.m. MT.
