PALOS VERDES – The University of Washington Huskies made moves on day two of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge as they improved upon their day one score by over 10 strokes finishing at 27-over 595 (304-291). The Huskies were led by junior Rino Sasaki as she is tied for 34th heading into the final round.
"Today, we had perfect conditions and we were definitely sharper out there on the course, which is evident by our scores," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We just had a few too many bogeys and if we clean that up, we will be in a good position. I was really proud of Martha and how she responded after a tough start. We really just need to make some more pars and not make mistakes. Our mood is good and they are encouraged in our first tournament so we will see how to do tomorrow."
Sasaki posted a 2-over 73 on Monday to finish tied for 34th. Her round included three birdies and was a one-stroke improvement from Sunday. Just behind her was senior Karen Miyamoto who is tied for 38th after climbing 11 spots during round two. Karen carded a 1-over 72 to move to 6-over 148.
Another Husky also made moves on the leaderboard during Monday's round as senior Alice Duan jumped 16 spots into a tie for 45th thanks to her overall score of 8-over 150. The senior finished her second round with a 1-over 72 following four birdies during her round. Sophomore Martha Lewis had a tough start as she opened with a bogey and a double but she responded by going even par over the next 18 to move into a tie for 56th at 9-over 151 (77-74).
Rounding out the UW contingent was freshman Brittany Kwon is in a tie for 71st at 13-over 155 following rounds of 77-78. The Dawgs wrap up their first spring tournament on Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m. and will be paired with Pepperdine and Ohio State.
