Longo Earns Wayne Gittinger Award
January 21, 2020 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - Washington's Claudia Longo was announced as the 2019 Wayne Gittinger Inspirational Award honoree by the Seattle Sports Commission today. Longo, a sophomore at Washington, earned the award that is given each year "to an inspirational young athlete who has overcome major medical obstacles to inspire others."
Longo was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis before enrolling at Washington for her freshman season in 2018. As a freshman, Longo helped coach her alma mater, Issaquah High School, and practiced with the Huskies. This season, she saw action in four games, including a career-high 26 minutes played against South Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Longo also earned Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll for her work in the classroom.
This is the first time Washington Women's Soccer has earned a Seattle Sports Commission award of any kind.
Longo will be honored at the Sports Star of the Year award ceremony, set for February 6 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available for the event online.
